Make and wear it! Many teachers and parents are probably thinking about doing crafts for Setsubun gatherings and events.
In such cases, we recommend making wearable oni (demon) masks.
The crafting process nurtures creativity and fine motor skills, and wearing the finished mask gives children a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
By paying attention to safety tips and the order of steps and keeping the atmosphere fun, even children who are afraid of oni can participate more comfortably.
Be sure to give it a try!
An ogre mask made with torn-paper collage

Let’s create a project packed with personal touches! You’ll need construction paper oni parts, origami paper in your favorite colors, scissors, glue, thick cardstock, rubber bands, and a stapler.
The simple step of tearing origami paper for the oni’s hair and gluing it on is great even for infant classes, but since this is for a class of five-year-olds, it might be nice to set a theme of finishing their work with careful attention to detail.
They can have fun arranging the hair in rainbow colors or decorating with craft punches.
Give it a try and incorporate it into your activities!

Oni Masks and Preparing for Setsubun
@lienkashii In the 1-year-old class, we made oni (ogre) masks☺️ We drew patterns on the inside of a milk carton using strings and pipe cleaners, then used paint to make stamps! An oni mask that’s fun to make and fun to enjoy after it’s finished is a perfect idea for a February craft.
Before you start, try reading a picture book about oni to spark creative inspiration—you might enjoy it even more.
Speaking of oni features, their hair is curly.
Let’s express that hair using stamps.
You can easily make a stamp by creating curly patterns with string or pipe cleaners on a milk carton.
Dip the stamp in paint, then dab it onto construction paper.
Cut it into a fluffy hairstyle, add horns, and you’re done.
Attach a paper band so it can be worn on the head.
Multinational design mask
@bambino_montessori Multinational Design Oni Mask Papercraft (for Bean-Throwing) In Japan, February features the Setsubun tradition, where people throw roasted soybeans. One of the big highlights for children is wearing oni (demon) masks. This papercraft not only adds color to the bean-throwing event, but also offers a fun, hands-on crafting experience. Unlike traditional Japanese oni masks, this product features a multinational design inspired by the colorful ethnic costumes of regions such as South America and Africa. It proposes a new way to enjoy a Japanese seasonal event while embracing the richness and diversity of different cultures. Set contents Mask base: 2 pages in PDF (black and white). Print on colored construction paper, or print on drawing paper and let children freely color with crayons or colored pencils. Parts: Full-color design in PDF. Print on drawing paper, cut out, and paste to complete. Gray areas indicate glue tabs. Print the Base on colored construction paper or drawing paper. If you print on drawing paper, children can create their own original oni by coloring freely. For the eye holes, an adult should cut them out with a craft knife or use tracing/carbon methods to open them. Print the Parts on drawing paper and cut them out with scissors. Attach the glue tabs to the Base to create a three-dimensional shape. Finally, attach a rubber band or make a paper band to secure the mask to the head. The size is designed for children and is not suitable for adults. This product is a downloadable PDF. Tools and materials such as scissors, glue, colored paper, and rubber bands are not included. As children color, cut, and paste to complete the mask, it offers more than just a craft—it provides an experience. This is a mask idea where you use a red base and attach colorful leaf-like pieces to create the design.
In Japan, ogres (oni) typically have two horns, but around the world there are many different ogre masks.
Some have rounded horns, some have no horns at all, and some resemble animals—it’s fascinating when you look into it.
If you want to make an oni mask that’s different from the usual, why not use these as references and give it a try? The way you place the leaf pieces will produce masks with very different impressions.
Try expressing your own unique, multicultural design.

This is an oni mask made by coloring a paper plate in your favorite oni color—like red or blue—and gluing on the facial parts, horns, and fangs.
If you want a neat-looking oni face, attach the parts while looking at a sample.
If you’d like to enjoy it like a fukuwarai game, put double-sided tape on the parts and stick them on while blindfolded.
To make the mouth position easy to find, cut off the bottom rim of the paper plate and attach the fangs in the notch you’ve created.
Once the oni face is finished, staple a strip of construction paper to the plate to form a headband and complete the mask.
Masks made with drawing paper and origami

Let’s make an ogre mask using construction paper and origami paper.
First, cut the construction paper into a circular shape to serve as the base of the face.
Then, cut out facial parts, horns, and fangs from the origami paper, and draw patterns on them with a pen.
Glue them onto the base to create the ogre’s face, and then cut out the eye holes.
Next, make slits around the edge of the face at 1.5 cm intervals, and use those slits to give the mask a three-dimensional look.
Finally, attach linked rubber bands so it can be worn on the face, and you’re done.
A mask made of stone powder clay

If you want to make an authentic oni (demon) mask, why not try using stone powder clay? Once you’ve settled on your image of the oni, build up the form on the mask base with clay.
Use a lightweight clay, and make the horns separately.
Since it’s a mask, remember to leave the eye areas open.
After the clay dries, paint it with acrylics or spray paint, attach the horns to the face, and add eyebrows using cotton to finish.
Stone powder clay is easy to handle, and once it’s dry, a nice advantage is that you can shape it by carving with a craft knife and similar tools.
