These might be common images associated with the music genre known as punk rock.

Of course, “punk” is a broad term—there are many subgenres like hardcore punk, ska punk, pop punk, and post-punk—and it’s difficult to cover the entire history.

In this article, however, we introduce recommended classic tracks with a focus on early punk rock.

We’ve chosen songs with an eye to their influence on later bands, so if you’re new to punk, be sure to give them a listen!

England Belongs to MeCock Sparrer

A song with a unique vibe that makes you want to throw your fist in the air without thinking.

Cock Sparrer is a band formed in London in 1972.

Although they didn’t achieve commercial success, they’re known as one of the bands that influenced the later street punk scene.

They are reportedly still performing live and continue to be active as a punk band.

If the Kids Are UnitedSHAM 69

A 1978 song that feels like a football chant for Britain’s national sport, soccer.

The chorus is perfect for getting a big crowd fired up—you can’t help but find yourself singing along.

It’s said to be a piece that expresses a desire to “unite! (please stop fighting)” aimed at both punks and skinheads, who were at odds at the time.

PeachesThe Stranglers

A song released in 1977 by a band with the formidable name “The Executioners.” If you listen closely, the rhythm is reggae.

The setting seems to be a summer beach, but it’s not refreshing at all.

Still, the sound has a kind of addictive quality, and it has become one of The Stranglers’ signature tracks.

Going UndergroundThe Jam

A stylish punk band led by Paul Weller, now known as the “Godfather of Punk.” They drew attention for the high quality of their songs as well as the members’ looks and fashionable style.

This work is a fast-paced piece brimming with rebellious spirit.

Released in 1980.

A 1979 track that exudes a lively energy reminiscent of power pop and alternative rock.

It’s a piece that sweeps you along with sheer power and momentum.

Fast Cars are a band from Manchester, England, and they released only a single CD (with appearances on other compilation CDs).

They apparently disbanded soon after, but remarkably reunited in 2002 and released a new album.
