Akina Nakamori, one of the “Flower 82 Generation,” often called a banner year for idols.
After appearing on the audition show Star Tanjō! in 1981, she was scouted by Warner-Pioneer and made her debut the following May with “Slow Motion.” She went on to release many hit songs, and her music remains beloved by many to this day.
Despite her cute appearance, her powerful singing voice is captivating.
She also demonstrated her talent as an actress, appearing in numerous TV dramas.

A Good Day to Set Out on a JourneyMomoe Yamaguchi

When you think of idols who represent the 1970s, Momoe Yamaguchi immediately comes to mind.
She was the runner-up on Star Tanjō! in 1972, which led to her signing with a record label.
The following year, in 1973, she made her film appearance and debuted as a singer.
Alongside Masako Mori and Atsuko Sakurada, she became famous as part of the “Hana no Chūsan Trio.” Despite her simple, somewhat youthful appearance, the mature lyrics of songs like “Aoi Kajitsu” (Blue Fruit) and “Hitonatsu no Keiken” (A Summer’s Experience) captivated audiences.
At the height of her popularity, Yamaguchi announced her retirement in 1980, which came as a surprise to many.
Even after retiring, she remains beloved, with her songs still frequently sung at karaoke.

Miho Nakayama made her acting debut in the 1985 TV drama “Maido Osawagase Shimasu” and has also been active as a singer.
She won the Best New Artist Award at the 27th Japan Record Awards and the 23rd Golden Arrow Award.
She went on to release hit singles and appeared in many popular dramas, becoming highly sought after in both music and television.
Many people know her by the nickname “Miporin.” Nakayama was also famous as one of the “Four Idol Queens” who enjoyed tremendous popularity in the late 1980s.
Even after her passing, she continues to captivate the hearts of her fans.

As the lead actress playing Saki Asamiya in the Sukeban Deka series, idol Yoko Minamino became a breakout star.
Her well-proportioned looks drew attention even back then, and many women likely admired her.
She debuted in 1985 with “Hazukashisugite,” then released a string of hits including “Rakuen no Door,” “Haikara-san ga Tooru,” and “Toiki de Net,” joining the ranks of top idols.

Many people probably think of Kyoko Koizumi as a popular idol from the Showa era.
She won the Grand Prix on “Star Tanjō!” in 1981 and made her singing debut the following year.
With the 1983 release of “Nagisa no Haikara Ningyo,” she topped the Oricon weekly chart for the first time, joining the ranks of top idols.
The ‘Kyon Kyon cut’ hairstyle also became a trend, making her a fashion leader admired by girls at the time.
Even at 58, her beauty remains just as it was back then—Koizumi-san is as stunning as ever.

From the Showa to the Heisei era, Minako Honda was active as an idol and musical theater actress.
She debuted as a singer at 17, won numerous awards including the Japan Record Award and the Japan Cable Radio Award, and produced many hit songs.
“Marilyn in 1986” is one of them.
Her very cute face and clear singing voice are wonderful, aren’t they? She later was active in a rock band and on the musical stage.
Even after she passed away in 2005 following an illness, Minako Honda’s songs have continued to be loved by her fans.

She made her singing debut in 1980 with Hadashi no Kisetsu (Barefoot Season), went on to release many hit songs, and her music continues to be covered by various artists even now.
She was also adored for her cute looks, and the “Seiko-chan cut” became the go-to hairstyle for girls at the time.
Even after celebrating the 40th anniversary of her debut in 2021, her charm remains undiminished, and she is sure to shine even more brightly in the years to come.
