[For Seniors] Fun Activities That Liven Up Cool Evening Festivals and Summer Festivals
The big summer event, the “Cool Evening Festival.” This time, we’re introducing summer festival-style games and activities that older adults can enjoy together.
We’ve gathered classic booth games that capture the festival atmosphere, such as goldfish scooping, senbonbiki (string lottery), and target shooting.
Of course, these are all easy to run indoors at a facility.
If everyone encourages each other as they join in, it will surely become a wonderful memory.
By tailoring how each person participates, conversations will flow and the whole venue will be filled with smiles.

Summer Festival Booth-Style Games and Recreations (21–30)
Scooping Game

Let’s try a “scooping game” using beanbags and fans! Goldfish scooping or yo-yo fishing are perfect for summer festivals, but many venues have issues like it being difficult to use water.
With a “scooping game,” you can still enjoy the feel of goldfish scooping without water.
And since it’s a game, turning it into individual or team competitions will make it even more exciting.
Players use fans to scoop up beanbags and compete to see how many they can scoop within a set time.
Uchiwa Ball Toss

Many facilities may have had everyone handcraft uchiwa fans in preparation for summer.
You probably feel attached to the fans you made yourselves.
Why not use those fans to play a game? How about enjoying “Uchiwa Toss,” a game using fans and balloons? Place a container to serve as the goal on a table at a slightly elevated position, and at the starting signal, everyone works together to guide the balloon into the goal with their fans.
It may seem simple, but the balloon’s unpredictable movement increases the difficulty of the game.
Sazae-san dance

This performance features wearing a Sazae-san mask and apron and presenting a comical dance.
The music used is “Sazae-san Ikka,” well known as the anime’s ending theme.
Its gentle rhythm makes the humorous movements stand out even more.
Not only are there motions inspired by the lyrics, but also bold moves that wouldn’t normally fit the world of Sazae-san—this variety of choreography is another point that captivates viewers.
While keeping the unique atmosphere in mind, including call-and-response among multiple Sazae-sans, let’s dance with joy.
Kiyoshi’s Zundoko Song

Let’s perform a celebratory dance to Kiyoshi Hikawa’s signature song, “Kiyoshi no Zundoko Bushi.” The fact that it’s a gentle enka number is a big point—it can help not only the dancers but also the audience feel relaxed as they watch.
Since the song doesn’t have fixed choreography, deciding what kind of movements to use is important; imagining something like a Bon Odori style might make it easier to understand.
Put care into the costumes as well, and make sure to convey both the joy of matching movements to the song and the spirit of celebration.
street performance

Street performance is a staple act at events, and the fun part is that you can see the effort behind it—whether it ends in failure or success.
To help people feel the excitement of street performance, it’s actually important to show some failures on purpose; the success that follows will stand out even more.
And since clowns are strongly associated with street performance, putting real thought into the costume can evoke a circus-like atmosphere.
We recommend taking on a variety of acts—like juggling or cigar boxes—and letting the audience watch you work hard as you rise to the challenge.
