[For Seniors] Fun Activities That Liven Up Cool Evening Festivals and Summer Festivals

The big summer event, the “Cool Evening Festival.” This time, we’re introducing summer festival-style games and activities that older adults can enjoy together.

We’ve gathered classic booth games that capture the festival atmosphere, such as goldfish scooping, senbonbiki (string lottery), and target shooting.

Of course, these are all easy to run indoors at a facility.

If everyone encourages each other as they join in, it will surely become a wonderful memory.

By tailoring how each person participates, conversations will flow and the whole venue will be filled with smiles.

Summer Festival Booth-Style Games and Recreations (21–30)

Hanagasa Ondo

FY2024 Day Service Hanaichigo Respect-for-the-Aged Day Celebration: Hanagasa Ondo
Hanagasa Ondo

The Hanagasa Ondo is danced while holding hats decorated with artificial flowers.

The Hanagasa Ondo is also the main attraction of the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival, which is held every summer in Yamagata Prefecture.

Incidentally, the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is one of the four major festivals of the Tohoku region.

The Hanagasa Ondo, danced with beautiful flowered hats, is visually stunning and would make a wonderful performance.

Watching the Hanagasa Ondo while inviting older adults to clap along is likely to liven things up.

Some seniors may have danced it in the past, and others may feel nostalgic watching the performance.

It could even spark conversations from there.

Sazae-san dance

This performance features wearing a Sazae-san mask and apron and presenting a comical dance.

The music used is “Sazae-san Ikka,” well known as the anime’s ending theme.

Its gentle rhythm makes the humorous movements stand out even more.

Not only are there motions inspired by the lyrics, but also bold moves that wouldn’t normally fit the world of Sazae-san—this variety of choreography is another point that captivates viewers.

While keeping the unique atmosphere in mind, including call-and-response among multiple Sazae-sans, let’s dance with joy.

Summer Festival Stall-style Games & Recreation (31–40)

Kiyoshi’s Zundoko Song

[Kiyoshi no Zundoko-bushi] “Respect-for-the-Aged Gathering”
Kiyoshi's Zundoko Song

Let’s perform a celebratory dance to Kiyoshi Hikawa’s signature song, “Kiyoshi no Zundoko Bushi.” The fact that it’s a gentle enka number is a big point—it can help not only the dancers but also the audience feel relaxed as they watch.

Since the song doesn’t have fixed choreography, deciding what kind of movements to use is important; imagining something like a Bon Odori style might make it easier to understand.

Put care into the costumes as well, and make sure to convey both the joy of matching movements to the song and the spirit of celebration.

Tankō-bushi (Coal Miner’s Song)

Respect-for-the-Aged Day: We performed the Tankō Bushi dance at the day service. 2024
Tankō-bushi (Coal Miner's Song)

Tanko-bushi is a folk song from Fukuoka Prefecture, best known for being used in Bon Odori.

Let’s showcase a comical dance set to its light, buoyant rhythm.

Since the song strongly evokes Bon Odori, we’ll center the choreography around that style and gradually add variations, including comedic movements.

The lyrics that depict the moon floating in the night sky are also memorable, so dancing in moon-themed costumes inspired by that image is highly recommended.

Your creativity will be tested in how much humor you can weave into this gently paced piece.

Escape Show

FY2024 Hana Ichigo Senior Appreciation Party — Hana Ichigo Circus!! Escape Show!!
Escape Show

Among various magic shows, the grand finale that really brings the house down is often an elaborate escape.

Let’s challenge an escape from an impossible situation and give the audience a huge surprise.

The classic routine is being locked in a box, having swords thrust into it, then removing the swords and opening the lid to reveal the performer unharmed.

The mechanism is simple—there’s a hole at the back to slip through—but the key is figuring out how to carry it out without letting the audience catch on.

Use clever touches to heighten the surprise, such as showing an initial failure to lower their guard.

Who is the master of the uchiwa?!

Day Home Future – Recreation: Who is the master of uchiwa (hand fans)?!
Who is the master of the uchiwa?!

Speaking of summer, uchiwa fans are a must-have, right? They’re convenient and easy to use, and they’re cherished as items that blow away the heat.

This time, we’re introducing a recreation activity using uchiwa.

It’s a game where you use a fan to put tissues into a box! You can enjoy competing to see who can put the most tissues in.

As long as you have a fan, it’s an easy game you can play not only at day service centers but also at home.

It helps strengthen the hands and arms, and it’s great for stimulating the brain, so we highly recommend it.

Balloon scooping

[No Crowding] A Recreation Game for Seniors (Home Care, Day Services, Nursing Homes) Using Fans and Balloons: “Balloon Scooping”
Balloon scooping

Balloon scooping is a game where everyone can gather, cooperate, and relax together.

Of course, you can also enjoy it on your own if you prefer to focus and play solo.

Participants share both the tension of guiding balloons into a box with a fan and the joy when a balloon goes in.

The balloons are light and don’t require much strength, making it accessible for older adults as well.

Preparation and cleanup are simple, and it can be enjoyed indoors, so it isn’t affected by the weather.

It’s a wonderful event where everyone can spend time with a smile.
