Indoor games and recreational activities recommended for summer

We’re introducing indoor games and activities perfect for kids in the summer! When you think of summer, many people probably picture outdoor fun like swimming at the beach, playing in rivers, or going camping.

However, it’s not realistic to go out every day during the holidays, and in recent years the extreme heat has made it difficult to spend time outdoors.

Considering children’s safety, it’s not easy to just say, “Go play outside!” For parents in that situation, we’ve gathered a list of indoor activities that are perfect for summer and fun to enjoy together with your kids.

With a bit of creativity, you can enjoy all kinds of play even indoors.

We hope you find these ideas helpful!

Bowling

Do you remember the first time you went bowling? That loud crash when the pins fell, the thrill of getting a strike—I can see why it’s still so popular.

It’s nice to go out to the bowling alley with the family once in a while.

And if you’d rather stay in, I recommend plastic-bottle bowling at home.

A baseball or a small handball works fine as the ball! You can play in different ways by rolling from farther away or increasing the number of bottles.

You can even enjoy a mini version using pencils and a ping-pong ball!

wheat clay

Let me introduce wheat clay, a play dough you can make from scratch.

The biggest advantage of wheat clay is that it’s gentle on the body.

That’s great for kids who don’t like the distinctive smell of regular clay.

All you need are common household ingredients—flour, oil, water, and salt.

Put them in a bag and knead, and it’s ready.

The amounts are up to you.

Adjust the water and oil until it’s soft enough for your child to knead.

Once it’s the right firmness, add your favorite paint colors and knead again, then have fun making hamburgers, sushi, dolls, and more! It’s an easy, indoor activity using just things you have at home—highly recommended.

The nerves in their fingertips develop, and they become more dexterous with their hands.

If you make the folding instructions easy to see, not only will they have a lot of fun playing, but they can also teach each other, which is great for making friends.

The reason things often don’t turn out well is that each fold tends to be done carelessly.

If you teach them to “take their time and make each step neatly and firmly,” they’ll improve.

Let's experiment with red cabbage

This experiment uses the anthocyanins found in red cabbage to enjoy the different color changes that occur with alkaline and acidic chemical reactions.

You can try it with various everyday items like condiments and household liquids, making it ideal as a child’s first chemistry experiment.

While comparing your predictions with the actual results, you can also experience the differences between substances visually—for example, recognizing that one liquid is alkaline and another is acidic.

Flag-raising game

The “Flag Raising Game,” which almost everyone has played, is a game where one person holds a red and a white flag, while another gives instructions like “Raise red, lower white,” and the person with the flags tries to move according to the commands.

It’s a basically simple game, but with a few little tweaks, it could become even more fun.
