Challenge your limits! A collection of Vocaloid songs with high keys and soaring high melodies

Many people probably have the impression that “Vocaloid songs have high keys.” In fact, the pitch range you can manipulate with synthetic vocal software is quite wide.

If you own one, you know—you’ve probably tried making it sing at absurdly high pitches, right? In this article, I’ve put together a list of Vocaloid songs with high keys! I think it’s a playlist that can help you choose songs for karaoke or cover videos.

Strictly speaking, in music theory there’s a difference between “a melody that includes high notes” and “a song with a high key,” but I’ve kept things loose here to be more accessible.

By all means, challenge the limits of your own vocal cords!

A striking example of how key changes can transform a song’s atmosphere is Teniwoha’s “Hakka.” It was included on their fourth album, “NO BOY,” released in 2021 after a five-year hiatus.

The music video for “Hakka” was uploaded to YouTube ahead of the album.

When the chorus hits, the song modulates to a different key than before, and the latter half of the chorus features a higher melodic line.

After the instrumental break, the final, climactic chorus shifts to an even higher melodic line, ramping up the excitement.

“Hollow Sleep” is a song by the Vocaloid producer Nuyuri, who is also known as the arranger of ZUTOMAYO’s “Byoushin wo Kamu” (Biting the Second Hand).

The video was released on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube in 2020.

It’s a cool track with stylish chord voicings and a tight groove, but the chorus is extremely high.

The verses and pre-chorus aren’t that high, yet the moment the chorus comes in, the range shoots up dramatically.

That contrast is striking and gives the song an addictive quality that makes you want to listen again.

Hitoshizuku × Yama△ is a Vocaloid producer duo known for songs featuring Kagamine Rin and Len.

Their 2015 piece “Hoshiori Uta” is a poignant song modeled after the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi.

It boasts a grand, beautiful sound, and her high-tone vocals are deeply moving.

The story-like lyrics unfold dramatically and are enough to bring you to tears.

You’ll experience a rich narrative that feels far deeper than its sub-four-minute runtime.

If you’re confident in your clear, soaring high notes, be sure to give it a try.

Vocaloid producer Kanzaki Iori, known for poetic songs with strong storytelling, has drawn significant attention.

His signature track, “Inochi ni Kirawarete Iru” (“Hated by Life Itself”), has been covered by many artists, including the singer Mafumafu.

Among his works, the song best known for its high key is “I Don’t Understand Music.” It was included on the 2019 album “Hakushi” (“Blank”).

Its straightforward band sound unfolds at a slow tempo and strikes straight to the heart.

Hatsune Miku’s high notes, carrying a sense of longing, are absolutely swoon-worthy.

Although the key is high, the melody develops within a fairly consistent range, making it a great recommendation for those trying high-tone vocals for the first time!

Dynamic Ji-enz is a music project set up as a band by Carlos Hakamada.

The video drawing attention on their YouTube channel is “∞ Mawaru ∞.” It’s a song themed around sushi, comically depicting plates circling on a conveyor-belt sushi lane.

The vocals use Hatsune Miku and Otomachi Una, featuring ultra-high harmonies.

It’s a level of singing that humans would find hard to produce.

Also unique is the band member introduction during the instrumental break.
