The cold season has arrived.

This time, we’d like to share ideas for winter wall decorations to create a warm atmosphere together with older adults.

There are plenty of projects that capture the changing season—not just Christmas, but also New Year’s kadomatsu, Mount Fuji, snowflakes, and more.

Why not make winter memories by enjoying crafts together using colorful origami and tissue paper? It’s also effective as finger-mobility rehabilitation, and displaying the finished pieces will brighten up the facility’s atmosphere.

Enjoy giving it a try!

New Year’s Mount Fuji decoration made of paper

Here’s a wall decoration idea featuring Mount Fuji, a familiar motif for the New Year.

Since it involves crafts using various types of paper—origami, cardstock, crepe paper, and more—the main tasks are cutting and pasting, making it perfect for older adults to enjoy creating.

First, apply your choice of paper to a cut piece of cardboard to make the base, then combine elements like Mount Fuji, the first sunrise of the year, and the zodiac animal for that year.

You can finish it with a traditional Japanese look using washi or chiyogami, or go for a modern Japanese vibe by pairing it with Western-style flowers—both are great! The charm of this project lies in the freedom to arrange and design it exactly the way you like.

shimenawa (sacred Shinto rope)

This is a shimenawa decoration you can easily make using kraft paper or origami.

Real shimenawa use straw or rice plants, but you can actually create a surprisingly realistic one with paper! Crumple kraft paper to add wrinkles, twist it like a rope, shape it into a loop, cross the ends, and secure with cellophane tape.

For the crossed, leftover sections, make small cuts to mimic the texture of straw.

Finally, decorate it with a fan made by accordion-folding origami, and a camellia flower made by layering five round-cut pieces of paper—and you’re done!

Lucky Cat New Year Wreath

New Year decorations that wish for the health and happiness of your family—how about making them with origami? This time, we’re introducing a particularly cute one: a “Maneki-neko New Year wreath.” First, combine four sheets of origami to create the wreath portion.

Using patterned origami gives it a pop and lively look.

Once the wreath is complete, fold a Maneki-neko and attach it to the wreath.

Feel free to change the cat’s expression to your liking.

This way, a New Year decoration that is already auspicious will feel even more lucky.

Christmas tree

Make lots of small trees and arrange them in the shape of a big tree for double the cuteness! It will really boost the Christmas mood.

Cut a green sheet of construction paper into a circle, then cut it in half and accordion-fold it to form a tree shape.

Make slits along the mountain folds of the accordion, then fold those sections into small triangles to create the distinctive jagged look of a Christmas tree.

After that, have fun decorating freely by hanging hearts, stars, and other pieces from the jagged edges, or by lining up multiple small trees to form one large tree.

Chinese zodiac (the sexagenary cycle)

Chinese zodiac (the sexagenary cycle)

New Year’s is the biggest event that comes in winter, isn’t it? To celebrate the New Year and to express wishes for a healthy year ahead, how about incorporating the zodiac as a motif? Since these are animal motifs, they’re easy to understand, and by featuring the zodiac animal of the new year, it also helps you stay aware of what year it is—an important point.

You could focus on the zodiac animal for that particular year, or you might arrange all twelve animals of the zodiac.

Consider whether to highlight a valiant, zodiac-like look, or to emphasize cuteness by leaning into the animal motif.

If you handcraft New Year’s decorations, you can really feel the changing of the seasons! As the New Year approaches, why not try incorporating this into a winter craft activity? The charm of these New Year’s decorations is that they’re easy to make using origami and tissue paper.

By combining a paper flower made from accordion-folded tissue paper and a fan folded in the same accordion style, you can create a lovely New Year’s decoration that rivals store-bought ones.

Creations made at the day-service center can be taken home and enjoyed by displaying them at the entrance, for example.

poinsettia

Arrange the bright red poinsettias that you often see in December like a tree, and create a festive Christmas wall decoration! Crumple green and red origami paper to give it a wrinkled texture, then cut each into leaf shapes.

For the red leaves, prepare three sizes—large, medium, and small—so they get smaller toward the center of the flower.

Next, layer and glue the red leaves on top of the green ones, and attach a small crumpled piece of yellow origami paper in the center to complete your poinsettia decoration! A single piece is adorable on its own, but arranging them in the shape of a tree will make your room even more festive.
