Bands, Artists, and Singers from Kansai (61–70)
Explosive Pannier-santricot

The shocking girls’ band tricot.
Their live performances are incredibly intense.
Their wild, almost worrisome movements are insane.
Tricot used to be a band based in Shiga and Kyoto, but they’ve now become popular nationwide.
Tokyokururi

This is Quruli’s debut single, released when they made their major-label debut in 1998.
The understated vocal delivery, the guitar tone and song structure that even evoke a sense of nostalgia—Quruli’s sound, which seems to embody Kyoto’s musical culture, being embraced nationwide makes me very happy and even proud.
People from Kyoto don’t say “go up to Tokyo” when they head there.
This is a song about Tokyo that feels distinctly Kyotoan.
O-Shichi and the Night Cherry BlossomsSakamoto Fuyumi

Fuyumi Sakamoto, an enka singer known for famous songs such as “Yozakura Oshichi” and “Mata Kimi ni Koishiteru,” is from Kamitonda, Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture.
It’s clear she set her sights early on, as she wrote in a middle school essay that her dream was to become an enka singer.
In addition to her original songs as an enka artist, she has released albums covering a variety of J-pop tracks, showcasing a musical range that goes beyond enka.
She is also active as an actress, and is an artist whose continued success is highly anticipated.
Sora-buneJōshima Shigeru (TOKIO)

Shigeru Joshima, the leader of TOKIO and one of the most popular members of the Johnny’s groups.
He’s the only one in the group who speaks Kansai dialect, as he’s from Nara Prefecture! He joined Johnny’s while still in high school and later formed TOKIO.
He had been playing the guitar even before forming TOKIO, and his skills are top-notch.
On variety shows and the like, he comes across as gentle, a bit clumsy, and very approachable, but the moment he picks up a guitar, he suddenly looks sharp and super cool!
Jindo MonogatariTendō Yoshimi

Although her official profile lists Yao City, Osaka Prefecture as her birthplace due to moving there in childhood, enka singer Yoshimi Tendo is originally from Hayacho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture.
Influenced by her music-loving father, she appeared on amateur singing shows at the age of seven and won most of the competitions, drawing attention to her talent even before her debut.
With her powerful voice and endearing personality, she is well known even among generations less familiar with enka.
In 2017, she won the Best Vocal Performance at the 59th Japan Record Awards, making her one of the leading singers in Japan’s enka world.
I’m proud of youOkuno Ryo (KIDS)

Ryo Okuno, the frontman of KIDS—a rock band from Nara Prefecture that made its major debut in 2012.
Although the band hasn’t been actively performing since 2015, they were given a major opportunity in 2020 to co-headline on tour with their close friends THE ORAL CIGARETTES, delivering a brilliant performance.
While he captivates with his husky voice and soaring high notes, it’s also worth noting his exceptional talent as a melody maker, crafting one catchy, ear-pleasing, and emotionally resonant song after another.
He’s a musician to watch not only for his work with the band but also for his solo activities.
BLjoōbachi

Formed in 2009 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Queen Bee is a rock band that showcases a striking identity within Japan’s music scene.
Centered around vocalist Avu-chan, they operate with a one-of-a-kind artistic sensibility not only in music but also in visuals and fashion.
Signature songs include Disco, the theme song for the 2012 film Moteki, and BL from 2020.
As expected, Queen Bee has strong ties to the live house community around Sannomiya and actively puts on curated shows.
They can be considered a leading rock band of Kobe’s underground scene.
