POPSONGYonezu Kenshi

Kenshi Yonezu, one of the defining artists of the 2010s J-pop scene, is also from Tokushima Prefecture.
His career as a musician began in 2009 under the name Hachi as a Vocaloid producer.
He quickly gained popularity among Vocaloid listeners, and since 2012 he has performed as a singer-songwriter, handling vocals himself.
His songs, constructed with overwhelming songwriting skill, are full of addictive tracks that are quirky yet catchy and stick in your head.
Beyond the hits you hear on TV, he has created many other wonderful songs, so I highly recommend exploring his past works.
Shangri-LaChatto Monchī

When you hear someone is from Tokushima Prefecture, fans of 2000s rock bands will likely think of them.
They were popular enough to be considered a leading girls’ band of the time, and their appeal lay in straightforward rock numbers built around catchy melodies and a crunchy, distorted guitar sound.
The album “Awa Come” includes songs with distinctly Tokushima-flavored lyrics, such as “Seishun no Ichiban Fudasho,” and they also leaned into their Tokushima roots by hosting their own festival in the prefecture.
Letter ~To You at Fifteen~Anjura Aki

Angela Aki, the singer-songwriter known for Sakura-iro and Tegami: Haikei Jūgo no Kimi e, is also from Tokushima Prefecture.
She performs in a piano-and-vocals style, and her clear, expansive voice with its rich resonance is truly captivating.
She spent her high school years in the United States and continued to live there through college and into her early career, pursuing music for some time in America.
Her apprenticeship period was long; after her musical activities in the U.S., she returned to Japan and steadily continued earnest musical work, eventually making her debut.
Brownies of TearsKōno Tae (Shiroi Asa ni Saku)

Tae Kono, the vocalist of the two-piece rock band Shiroi Asa ni Saku (Blooming in the White Morning), is from Tokushima Prefecture.
She began her career in 2012 as the frontwoman of the girls’ band Chimanako.
She gained attention at the audition event RO69 JACK and continued to work energetically thereafter.
In 2015, the band changed its name and underwent some lineup changes, and in 2020 they released the mini-album “lumino(us).” Her hallmark is a clear, straight-through singing voice.
Radiant DaysMikiha (Supira Supika)

Mikiha, the vocalist of Spira Spica, is from Tokushima Prefecture.
Performing mainly in the Kansai region under the band name Snowman, they changed their name to Spira Spica in 2018 and expanded their activities nationwide.
Their song Start Dash was selected as the theme for Gundam Build Divers, which raised their profile as an anison (anime song) band.
With Mikiha’s smile and cheerful personality at the center, their sound—evoking the spirited air of youth—also makes them an appealing band.
Your backKitajima Yasuo (Sūshinsei)

Vocalist Yasuo Kitajima of Su-xing-cyu, a band known as “Japan’s most tear-jerking comic band” that energizes live houses and festival stages across the country, hails from Tokushima Prefecture.
If you’re a rock band fan, you’ve probably seen their artist photo featuring briefs and a happi coat—and they actually perform live dressed just like that.
Their hallmark is humor-packed songs and MCs, but woven into them are the heat and heartache of youth that stir nostalgia, proving they’re far more than just a novelty act.
Be sure to experience their live performance at least once.
