Akari Yamanishi, who was active as the lead vocalist of the enka girl group MIZMO, hails from Arida City in Wakayama Prefecture.

After the group disbanded, she made her solo debut in June 2022 with the single “Dear, Land of Oranges.” Filled with love for her hometown, this longing-for-home enka showcases her powerful voice and fresh, expressive delivery.

A proven talent who competed in NHK’s “Nodo Jiman” Grand Champion Tournament in high school, her singing ability—honed under her mentor Hideo Mizumori—comes with an impeccable reputation.

In July 2025, she will release “Michishirube” digitally, produced by Noritake Kinashi with lyrics and music by George Tokoro.

In 2021, atagi, the vocalist of the rock band Awesome City Club who drew attention with the massive hit “Wasurena,” is from Wakayama Prefecture.

Awesome City Club was formed in 2013 and made their major debut in 2015.

They released popular songs such as “Outsider” and “Vampire,” gaining attention in the Japanese rock scene.

Since then, atagi has often shared lead vocals with PORIN, and his clean, straight high-tone voice is particularly appealing.

Although her official profile lists Yao City, Osaka Prefecture as her birthplace due to moving there in childhood, enka singer Yoshimi Tendo is originally from Hayacho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture.

Influenced by her music-loving father, she appeared on amateur singing shows at the age of seven and won most of the competitions, drawing attention to her talent even before her debut.

With her powerful voice and endearing personality, she is well known even among generations less familiar with enka.

It’s clear she set her sights early on, as she wrote in a middle school essay that her dream was to become an enka singer.

In addition to her original songs as an enka artist, she has released albums covering a variety of J-pop tracks, showcasing a musical range that goes beyond enka.

She is also active as an actress, and is an artist whose continued success is highly anticipated.

Hatake, the guitarist and leader of Sharam Q—a rock band that became emblematic of the 1990s J-pop scene thanks to major hits like “Single Bed” and “Zuruik Onna” (“Sly Woman”)—is from Wakayama Prefecture.

Known for a wide-ranging musical palette spanning kayōkyoku, hard rock, and enka, he is also recognized for his broad musical activities beyond the band, including writing songs for and producing numerous artists.

At the same time, when arranging the band’s music, he often gives the guitar parts a metal-like edge, resulting in arrangements that match his look and give the songs a truly one-of-a-kind finish.

He is also an energetic artist who records and performs sessions with musicians from overseas.
