[Childcare] August Crafts: Cute Ideas to Make in Summer

In hot August, children in daycare and kindergarten often spend more time indoors.

Water play and pools can help them cool off, but they don’t stay in the water all day.

So here, we’re introducing crafts and activities perfect for summer that give a refreshing feel.

There are lots of fun ideas kids will love.

Many materials can be found as recyclables or at 100-yen shops, so feel free to incorporate them easily into your childcare activities.

Please use this as a reference and enjoy cool summer creations with the children! Since the things children make are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (production) in the text.

Cute morning glory

[Origami] How to Fold a Morning Glory | Easy, no-cut method kids can do! Great for wall art and recreational activities at senior day-care centers
Cute morning glory

Let’s make colorful and cute morning glories out of origami that bloom cheerfully under the summer sun.

First, fold the origami paper in half into a square twice, then unfold it.

Next, fold all four corners toward the center, flip it over, and slightly fold in the four corners.

Flip it over again, and for each loose corner, make two diagonal folds so it forms a peak; after doing this for all four corners, open the paper.

Finally, turn the paper over, and fold the four corners you just peaked toward the center along the creases, and you’re done.

Try making lots in different colors and decorating with them!

ice cream

[For 4-year-olds] Seasonal Origami: Ice Cream
ice cream

Let’s make an ice cream that tastes great in summer using origami.

Fold the origami paper into a triangle, then open it and fold the two left edges inward along the crease.

Reposition the paper so the white triangular section is at the top, and fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner.

Turn the paper over and fold only the top layer downward.

At this point, fold it so that about 2 centimeters of the colored section above the white triangle remains visible.

Turn the paper over again and flip top and bottom, then slightly fold the top and both side corners inward.

Your ice cream is complete!

shaved ice

[Preschool Craft] Shaved Ice Craft! An Easy Method Using Coffee Filters
shaved ice

Shaved ice is cool and refreshing, and kids love that it comes in so many flavors.

How about making shaved ice using a fun technique? First, draw freely on a coffee filter with water-based markers.

Next, spray it lightly with water using a mist bottle.

It’s really interesting to watch the drawings and patterns gently bleed, so take your time observing this with the kids.

Once the artwork is dry, stuff the coffee filter with cotton, secure it with tape, and place it on a plate cut out of construction paper—then it’s done.

You can display them on the wall, and they’d also be great for pretend play! Be sure to make lots of colorful shaved ice in a variety of hues.

Drawing with colored ice

[Summer Craft] Painting with Colored Ice! [For 1-Year-Olds]
Drawing with colored ice

Here’s a perfect ice-painting activity for hot summer days.

First, draw a picture on drawing paper with a white crayon.

We recommend adding summer themes like sea creatures, fireworks, or sunflowers to set the mood.

Next, mix food coloring with water and pour it into an ice tray to make colorful ice.

Insert a popsicle stick into each compartment before freezing so you’ll have a handle to hold while painting.

Once the ice is ready, use the colorful ice to paint over the paper where you drew.

As the ice melts, the paper will take on color and the white drawing will appear.

Kids can enjoy the excitement of wondering, “What picture will appear?” Since you’re using food coloring, it’s an easy and safe activity for young children to try.

Twisting Soap Bubbles

[Preschool Teacher] Easy Handmade Toy! How to Make a Spinning Bubble Wand [Daycare/Kindergarten]
Twisting Soap Bubbles

Let’s make twirling, sparkling bubbles that will captivate children! First, prepare eight long, thin strips of holographic origami paper.

Attach both ends of each strip to a straw so that the strips point in eight different directions.

Cut the straw, leaving only the sections where the holographic paper is attached at both ends.

Thread both ends onto a bamboo skewer or an even thinner straw, and secure them with tape to finish.

As you vary the speed at which you twist the handle, the shimmering bubble’s movement and shape will change, keeping children absolutely glued to its mesmerizing motion.

The cool, refreshing look is also perfect for this season.

Lantern with a cap

No.143 “Lantern with Bottle Caps” [Handmade Toy by a Nursery Teacher]
Lantern with a cap

Make it from scrap! Here’s an idea for a lantern made with bottle caps.

It’s great when you can use familiar materials or recycled items as you gather supplies.

This time, let’s make a lantern using unwanted caps.

You’ll need: two black PET bottle caps, eight red and eight white caps, twine, a glue gun or adhesive, pom-poms, round stickers, a hair elastic, a disposable chopstick, and an awl.

When using an awl or adhesives, be sure a teacher or guardian is present and supervising at all times.

Shaved ice with aluminum foil art

Let’s try drawing a picture of cold, delicious shaved ice using aluminum foil! First, color the aluminum foil with water-based markers in various colors.

After coloring, mist it with a spray bottle to blur the colors.

Once that’s done, place a sheet of drawing paper on top of the foil to transfer the colors.

You’ll get softly blended, beautiful hues; when they dry, cut them out in the shape of shaved ice.

Finally, combine them with drawing paper cut into the shape of a bowl, and you’re done! If you like, you can also add fruit shapes cut from paper.

Have the children handle tasks like coloring with the water-based markers, transferring the colors to the paper, and arranging the fruit.
