[Childcare] August Crafts: Cute Ideas to Make in Summer

In hot August, children in daycare and kindergarten often spend more time indoors.

Water play and pools can help them cool off, but they don’t stay in the water all day.

So here, we’re introducing crafts and activities perfect for summer that give a refreshing feel.

There are lots of fun ideas kids will love.

Many materials can be found as recyclables or at 100-yen shops, so feel free to incorporate them easily into your childcare activities.

Please use this as a reference and enjoy cool summer creations with the children! Since the things children make are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (production) in the text.

[Childcare] August crafts: 10 cute summer project ideas (21–30)

Braided Fish

If you’re looking for a hands-on craft, how about making this woven fish? Cut a fish shape out of construction paper and make horizontal slits along the body.

If you’re using a craft knife, be sure an adult handles that part.

Prepare several long, thin strips of construction paper in two colors, and weave them through the slits in a down–up–down pattern.

Once you’ve woven all the strips, snip the ends of the paper into fin shapes with scissors to finish.

The fish’s look will change depending on which two colors you choose, so try making it with your favorite colors!

[Scissors] Sea Creatures

Scissor Practice [Summer Craft] Let’s make an ocean with scissors and glue! Perfect for developing fine motor skills! [For ages 2–3]
[Scissors] Sea Creatures

Let’s make some sea creatures while practicing scissor skills.

Use sea animals with lots of legs—like octopuses, squids, and jellyfish—as motifs.

Draw them on construction paper and cut them out.

Draw lines on the legs, and have the children cut along those lines with scissors.

For two-year-olds, straight lines are probably better than curves.

You can also raise the difficulty a bit by trying seaweed drawn with zigzag lines.

Once everything is cut out, paste the pieces onto paper to create a summertime ocean scene.

Sea otter shell castanets

[Kindergarten/Preschool] August Sea Otter Shell Castanet Craft/Instrument
Sea otter shell castanets

Let’s make adorable otter castanets! First, as preparation, cut an otter shape out of cardboard and seashell shapes out of thick craft paper.

An adult should handle this part.

Once everything is ready, have the children paint the otter and the shells.

After the paint dries, draw the otter’s face and attach buttons to the inside of the shells.

Make sure to position the buttons so they strike each other when the shells close.

Hook a rubber band onto the shells and thread it through the otter’s neck.

Finally, attach a string to the otter so children can wear it around their necks, and you’re done.

Let’s play the otter castanets together while singing summer songs!

Easy scratch art with oil pastels

[Nursery/Kindergarten] Easy Scratch Art with Cray-Pas: “Let’s Draw Summer Fireworks”
Easy scratch art with oil pastels

Let’s enjoy free expression using scratch art.

First, color a sheet of drawing paper with crayons.

The key is to fill it in with bright colors so that no white areas remain.

Next, paint over everything with black acrylic paint so that all the colors you just applied are completely covered.

Once the paint is dry, use a bamboo skewer to freely draw your picture.

As you scratch, the black layer will come off and the colorful colors underneath will appear, so kids are sure to get absorbed in the activity! To give it a summery feel, we also recommend choosing themes like fireworks or starry skies.

Let’s make juice!

[Summer Craft] Let’s Make Juice with Color Film, Sponges, and Round Stickers! [For 3-Year-Olds]
Let's make juice!

Delicious juice is a favorite among kids, isn’t it? Let’s create a refreshing juice using colored film and round stickers.

First, cut construction paper into the shape of a cup.

Next, use a sponge cut into a square to stamp paint in your favorite colors.

Once the paint is dry, decorate by sticking round stickers on top.

Then, cut the colored film slightly smaller than the construction paper, and glue it onto the paper, leaving the top part unglued.

Fold origami paper to make a straw, insert it inside the colored film, and you’re done!

Pom-Pom Ice Cream

Pom-Pom Ice Cream

Let’s make a cute ice cream using tissue paper.

First, draw a pattern on brown construction paper, roll it up, and fasten it to make an ice cream cone.

Next, make flowers with tissue paper in your favorite colors.

Making about three kinds is recommended, because it creates a triple-scoop ice cream.

After that, just stack them in the order you like and glue them on! You’ll have a lovely ice cream that can be used not only as a craft project but also as a prop for pretend play.

It’s also fun to make lots and play together with your friends.

Easy-to-make takoyaki

[Preschool Craft] Perfect for a summer festival! Easy-to-make takoyaki preschool craft
Easy-to-make takoyaki

Let’s make takoyaki, a classic summer festival food stall item.

First, cut slits along the edge of brown construction paper, glue it together, and shape it into a 3D form to make the takoyaki plate.

Next, prepare tissue paper and construction paper to make the takoyaki.

Wrap construction paper around a crumpled ball of tissue paper to form a sphere, then brush on a mixture of liquid laundry starch (or glue) and paint to create the sauce.

Finally, finely cut green and red construction paper and sprinkle them over the takoyaki to finish.

You’ll have realistic-looking takoyaki, perfect for playing “takoyaki shop.”
