[Childcare] August Crafts: Cute Ideas to Make in Summer

In hot August, children in daycare and kindergarten often spend more time indoors.

Water play and pools can help them cool off, but they don’t stay in the water all day.

So here, we’re introducing crafts and activities perfect for summer that give a refreshing feel.

There are lots of fun ideas kids will love.

Many materials can be found as recyclables or at 100-yen shops, so feel free to incorporate them easily into your childcare activities.

Please use this as a reference and enjoy cool summer creations with the children! Since the things children make are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (production) in the text.

paper-cup wind chime

Summer Decorations: Handcrafted Wind Chimes — Second edition made with small, cute paper cups! How about making an unbreakable summer tradition by covering them with your favorite origami paper? [Tsukuru Mon]
paper-cup wind chime

Shall we make a wind chime using a paper cup? Mini-size cups might be difficult for children to handle, so let’s use a standard-sized paper cup.

First, cut off the bottom and the rim.

Since you’ll be using a utility knife, teachers should handle this step.

You can keep the original pattern on the cup, but to create a traditional feel, we recommend attaching washi-patterned origami paper.

Wrap it around the cup and secure it with glue.

Next, make slits in the cup, cut along the slits, then use a pencil or similar tool to curl the pieces.

Bring the tips together and fasten them.

Finally, punch a hole and attach a string and a tanzaku (a paper strip), and it’s complete!

Goldfish bowl made from paper plates

Goldfish bowl made from paper plates

Let’s make a goldfish bowl using paper plates.

First, cut the edges of two paper plates with scissors to create a goldfish bowl shape.

Next, use a craft knife to cut out the center of one of the plates.

Please have the teacher do the center-cutting step.

Cover the cut-out center with plastic wrap and secure it with tape.

On the other plate—the one without a hole—attach light blue construction paper to the center, and add goldfish shapes cut from construction paper so they can “swim.” Have the children draw patterns on the goldfish.

After drawing patterns around the goldfish as well, stack the plate with the plastic wrap on top and fasten them together to finish.

The goldfish seen through the plastic wrap look so pleasantly at home in their bowl.

colorful cotton candy

Fluffy, cute, and sweet, cotton candy is a classic festival treat.

How about making some fluffy cotton candy of your own? Prepare various colors of paint diluted with water, then dip small, torn pieces of cotton into the colored water to dye them.

Once the cotton dries, put it in a clear bag or stick it onto a skewer-like stick, and your cotton candy is complete! It’s a good idea to have children handle the steps of tearing the cotton and dipping it into the colored water.

With its bright, festive look, this craft is sure to delight kids.

Tropical juice in sponge art

How about using a sponge to paint a tropical juice that’s perfect for hot summer days? Prepare a long, thin melamine sponge and apply about three colors of paint to it.

Then slide the sponge across drawing paper to add color, and once it’s dry, cut it into the shape of a juice glass.

After that, combine it with construction paper cut into shapes like a glass, straw, and fruit to complete the piece! If you want a fizzy look, we recommend sticking on a few white round stickers.

Have the children do the sponge coloring and arrange the other parts themselves.

[Ages 4 and up] Wobbly, cute watermelon yacht

[Summer Papercraft] Wobbling “Watermelon Yacht” – Easy Origami Wall Decoration for Preschool Crafts
[Ages 4 and up] Wobbly, cute watermelon yacht

This is a cute watermelon-themed yacht made from a paper plate.

First, trim the paper plate to match the size of origami paper.

Next, apply glue to the back of the paper plate and stick on green origami paper.

Once the glue is dry, trim around the edges with scissors.

Fold it in half and cut out the center.

When children are doing the cutting, it’s helpful for the teacher to draw cutting lines beforehand.

Leave a small uncut section, attach red origami paper there to make the yacht’s sail.

Painting the seeds by dabbing with a cotton swab dipped in paint is also a fun activity.

Torn-paper collage: Making a lantern

Torn-paper collage: Making a lantern

Why not try depicting lanterns using the collage technique? Collage helps develop fine motor skills and a sense of color.

The method is simple: make a collage on white drawing paper and shape it like a lantern! Letting children choose colors freely brings out their individuality.

Because lantern shapes can be hard to imagine, the teacher should lightly mark the approximate size and shape in pencil beforehand.

From the classic red to green, blue, yellow, and more—let children choose their favorite colors to express themselves.

Be sure to have the parents take a look at the finished piece.

turtle

[Childcare Craft] Summer Wall Decoration: Cute Turtles with Paper Plates
turtle

This is a cute turtle wall decoration made with paper plates and raffia tape.

First, color the paper plate freely with crayons.

Next, make diagonal cuts with scissors and weave in the raffia tape.

It’s fun to see a lattice pattern form, just like a turtle shell.

For the turtle’s head and limbs, attach double-sided tape to pieces of construction paper you’ve cut out and stick them onto the paper plate.

Draw the eyes with a crayon, add double-sided tape to the back, and it’s done.

Surrounded by turtles that look like they’re swimming leisurely through the sea, you’ll really feel the summer vibe.
