[For 0-year-olds] Cute sports day themes: Ideas to make the event more fun
We’re introducing sports day themes perfect for 0-year-old classes, such as “picture books,” “nursery rhymes,” “anime,” and “vehicles”! For 0-year-olds, it’s still difficult to do activities all together like the older classes.
If you’re looking for ideas that babies can enjoy and that parents will love, creating a cohesive “world” or theme is probably the best approach.
Simply giving a theme to activities like crawling races, circuits, and parent-child interaction games will turn them into memorable, super fun times.
We also recommend dressing the children in costumes that match the theme!

Shinkansen

One of the vehicles kids love most: the Shinkansen.
This time, we’re sharing an activity idea themed around the Shinkansen.
Using cardboard and construction paper, make the Hayabusa and Komachi.
To keep children safe while riding, it’s a good idea to place a chair inside.
Once everything is ready, all aboard! Have a parent dressed as a conductor push the train, and dash through a waterfall made from plastic tape streamers.
The light, silky sensation will spark their curiosity.
When you arrive at the station, receive a souvenir and you’re at the finish line.
It’s an activity parents and children can enjoy together, so be sure to give it a try!
Peekaboo

When you think of “peekaboo,” it’s the classic way to entertain a baby that you’ve probably done countless times since your child was born.
How about incorporating that “peekaboo” into a sports day event? Preparation is super simple: first, make a sign about 1 meter tall with a cute character, like an animal, drawn on it.
Next, take another sheet of cardstock, fold it around the middle of the body, and set it up so you can switch between two faces—one hidden and one visible.
Finally, attach a string to make it easy for the children to pull, and you’re done.
During the event, parents and children move forward together, and along the way they pull the string at the sign to play peekaboo, having fun as they make their way to the finish line!
My Neighbor Totoro

An idea that’s perfect for a sports day where parents and children work together is one that draws on the world of My Neighbor Totoro.
Set to music from the film, the event features a variety of evolving activities.
Because it’s a competition parents and children do together from start to finish, even infants in the 0-year-old class can enjoy it without any issues.
You can picture adorable babies crawling or rolling balls.
Using illustrations inspired by the Catbus or Totoro to evoke the anime’s atmosphere is also a great touch.
It’s a theme where you can either cheer on a child striving on their own or step in to assist and strengthen your bond.
The goldfish ran away.

This is a simple and cute activity that recreates the world of the picture book “The Goldfish Has Run Away.” In the story, the goldfish hides in various places, so once you start, look for the goldfish and return it to the aquarium at the goal.
In the book, it hides behind curtains, in flower pots, and so on, so it’s a good idea to draw large pictures of hiding places on poster paper ahead of time.
Make a few goldfish as well.
Enjoy the activity together while asking, “Where’s the goldfish?” as you search with your child!
Treasure Hunt

This is a treasure-hunt game where participants pass through a corridor made to look like the undersea world, like Urashima Taro, flip over an octopus panel, take a treasure from the treasure chest and hang it around their neck, then run back to the finish line.
The idea is fun, so it’s the kind of event that makes you feel like you’re setting out on an adventure.
It’s a good idea to put a variety of items in the treasure chest so participants can choose what they like.
It’s exciting to wonder what treasures are waiting, and getting your favorite one makes it even more thrilling.
Sushi Picnic

This is a parent-child activity.
You and your child transform into the sushi written on a card, and then the child crosses a balance beam to the finish.
To transform into sushi, the child wears the sushi topping shown on the card on their back like a backpack, and the parent gives the child a piggyback ride.
After going around a cone once, cross the balance beam.
This activity includes multiple elements: searching for your assigned sushi topping, parent-child bonding through piggybacking, and measuring physical ability on the balance beam.
Give it a try!
fruit

One activity that babies in the 0-year-old class can enjoy together with their parents is fruit picking.
Set up trees and fields you’ve made, and place fruit inside them.
The event involves parents and children carrying a basket, picking fruit, and heading for the goal.
By preparing various kinds of fruit, you can add the excitement of “Which one should I choose?” If babies in the 0-year-old class find it difficult to walk, please assist them to get close to the fruit.
Try incorporating this idea to encourage parent-child bonding.
