spinning top

Tops are fun, aren’t they? Their shapes may differ, but they’ve always been popular toys across eras.

So how about making one yourself? And not just any top.

If you design it with a diamond-shaped axle, it spins incredibly well.

Give it a try and see for yourself! Another plus is that since it’s made with origami, it’s easy to customize the shape and color.

Adding a little extra touch—like drawing illustrations or sticking on decals—can be fun too.

Easy-to-play! How to fold a spinning topNEW!

Here’s an easy and cool way to fold a spinning top.

Please prepare three sheets of origami paper.

First, fold the paper in half into a square twice.

Open it and fold it into a triangle twice.

Open it, fold it like a boat, then squash it into a square.

Using the center as the axis, fold up the edges of each of the four squares.

Open the folded sections and squash-fold them.

Use the remaining two sheets to fold the center and the top’s axle.

Align the center and the axle, and you’re done! If you make them in various sizes, they also make great decorations, so I recommend it.

This is a spinning top you can make using steps similar to the classic crane.

Please prepare a toothpick-like twig for the handle and axle.

Prepare one sheet of origami, fold it into a triangle twice, then squash the pocketed part into a square.

Next, crease and change the shape into a diamond.

Up to this point, it’s the same as the crane, right? Turn a layer of the paper to change the face, then fold up the bottom corners on both sides to make the origami into a triangle.

Now that you should have four triangles on the sides, make a mountain fold along each triangle’s center line and collapse it sideways, flattening it so each triangle becomes half its size.

When it looks like a pinwheel, flip the origami over and fold the collapsed sections inward to create a spiral pattern.

Insert the toothpick-like twig into the center, and it’s complete.

hand spinner

[Idea] A hand spinner made of origami? It spins this much??
hand spinner

A popular toy with kids that you spin on your finger: the hand spinner.

Many children might already have one, but why not make one out of origami and play with a unique, original hand spinner? You’ll need three sheets of origami paper, a stapler, an awl, scissors, and a toothpick.

First, make a ninja star (shuriken) using two sheets of origami.

Use the awl to make a hole in the center—this part can be dangerous, so be sure to do it together with an adult.

Next, take the remaining sheet of origami, cut it into four equal parts, and attach the pieces to the ninja star like wings.

Finally, insert a toothpick—shortened by cutting off the pointed tip—through the hole in the center, and it’s done! Make them with your friends and have fun playing together!

You can make it easily with a single sheet of blue origami! With the colored side facing in, fold into a triangle twice, then open it once.

Fold both ends up toward the crease you made.

Flip it over, fold the top layer of the origami down in half, open it, and make a crease.

Fold it down again so it goes just a little past that crease, then fold it up slightly to align with the first crease line you made.

Fold the corners at the top, bottom, left, and right of the face, and draw Piplup’s face with a pen to finish!

Prepare two sheets of green origami paper of the same size to make it.

Fold one sheet in half into a triangle twice, then open it once.

Fold from the large corner toward the long edge, and cut along the center crease made in the middle.

From there, create Rayquaza’s horns.

For the other sheet, fold it in half into a square twice, then slightly cut the open side, and fold the corners all around to shape a long, narrow face.

Draw Rayquaza’s face and yellow patterns, then combine them with the horns to finish!

[Pokemon Origami] How to Make Bulbasaur
A 3D-cute BulbasaurNEW!

One of the original starter Pokémon in the series, Bulbasaur, a Grass- and Poison-type.

Prepare two sheets of light green origami paper measuring 7.5 cm and one sheet of dark green origami paper.

Use the light green paper for the face and body, and the dark green paper to make the seed on Bulbasaur’s back.

For the face, start by folding into a triangle, and aim for an overall oval shape when finishing.

Don’t forget to draw the face after folding! For the body, start by making a vertical crease, fold the legs, and finish it to give a bit of three-dimensionality.

For the seed, start by folding into a triangle twice, and shape it into a plump, bulb-like form.

Finally, glue all the parts together to complete it!

Here’s an easy way to fold a spinning top that even small children can make.

First, fold it into a triangle twice and open it back up.

Once open, fold all four corners toward the center.

Fold each of the four edges slightly inward.

Using the creases you made, fold the center corners outward.

Fold the triangular parts inward.

Finally, make firm creases so that the square lines become the top’s axis.

If it spins well, you’re done! The folding method is simple, so if it doesn’t spin well, try sharpening the creases or making small adjustments.

How to fold customizable game piecesNEW!

[Origami] How to make an easy, well-spinning top — customizable, too
How to fold customizable game piecesNEW!

This simple-design top consists of three parts: the upper and lower bodies, and the handle.

For the top part, fold the origami sheet into a square twice to make creases, then unfold it and fold all the edges clockwise starting from the right edge.

After folding the top edge last, tuck the right section underneath the first edge you folded.

Then flip the paper over and do one cushion fold to finish.

The bottom part can be made using just the basic cushion fold.

For the handle, make one cushion fold, then add fine creases and fold it so the corners stand up, forming a pinwheel shape.

After stacking and assembling the parts, insert any shape you like between the upper and lower parts to customize it to your taste!
