Let’s make a carnation bouquet you can gift as is! Take 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm origami paper and fold it in a cushion (zabuton) fold, then fold all four corners inward.

Flip the paper over, fold it in half along the horizontal center line, then accordion-fold both sides toward the center three times.

Unfold back to the state where the corners are folded in, and crease the remaining sections in the same pattern.

Make three identical pieces, stack and glue them together, then attach them to a stem made by rolling paper of the same size—the carnation is complete.

Wrap it with origami paper as wrapping to finish the bouquet!

Here’s how to make a three-dimensional carnation using a single sheet of origami paper.

This method doesn’t require scissors or cutting—just one sheet is all you need, so it’s easy to try.

Instead of making cuts, you’ll shape the petals through delicate folds and careful pressure, which may feel a bit challenging if you’re not used to origami.

However, since the process mainly repeats the same steps, you’ll get the hang of it as you fold and be able to proceed more smoothly.

Be sure to follow the steps carefully and give it a try!

A carnation made with a single sheet of origami paper and zigzag scissors

When you think of carnations, you picture petals with dozens of ruffled layers, right? Let’s recreate that carnation using origami paper and pinking shears! First, fold the origami paper into a triangle twice, then open and flatten the two pocket-like corners.

Next, flatten the four new pocket-like sections in the same way.

Lift one layer of the flattened part and fold the top triangular tip downward.

As you flip through the paper, you’ll find three more identical sections—fold those tips down the same way.

Fold the paper in half along the center line, then round off the opposite pointed end with scissors and use pinking shears to make a zigzag edge.

Make an inside reverse fold on the pointed section, then open up the folded part that forms the flower—and you’re done.

How about giving a mini carnation, charming in its petite size? It requires some detailed work, but the steps are very simple, so it’s easy to make even if you’re not confident with crafts.

First, prepare four sheets of origami paper cut into circles of the same size, fold them, and make slits.

Keeping the jagged edges of carnation petals in mind, carefully snip with scissors.

The finer the cuts, the more delicate and elegant the result will be.

Be sure to make a slit so there’s a hole in the center as well.

Once you’ve made four identical pieces, stack them.

Finally, thread through a stem and calyx made from origami and secure with glue to finish.

Adding leaves or a ribbon will make it even cuter.

How about layering origami to create a soft-looking carnation? It may seem difficult at first glance, but this one is actually quite easy: divide a single sheet of origami paper into four equal parts, then repeat the same folds for each part and stack them.

The key point is the fold lines that express the fluttery feel of the petals, so try folding while picturing the curves of carnation petals.

Using double-sided origami paper or washi is also recommended.

The making process is fun! Here’s how to make a carnation by rolling it up.

First, fold the origami paper in half into a square and open it, then fold the top and bottom edges to meet the center line.

Next, fold it in half again along the center line.

Now fold it in half horizontally.

Then, make lots of small cuts from the bottom upward.

After making the cuts, open the paper and cut it in half.

Finally, apply glue to the edge without cuts, and wrap it around the origami stem, rolling it up to finish.

Shape and spread the petals while imagining a carnation.

This craft is perfect for kids to practice using scissors, so give it a try together with everyone!
