How about layering origami to create a soft-looking carnation? It may seem difficult at first glance, but this one is actually quite easy: divide a single sheet of origami paper into four equal parts, then repeat the same folds for each part and stack them.
The key point is the fold lines that express the fluttery feel of the petals, so try folding while picturing the curves of carnation petals.
Using double-sided origami paper or washi is also recommended.
Give it a try!

The making process is fun! Here’s how to make a carnation by rolling it up.
First, fold the origami paper in half into a square and open it, then fold the top and bottom edges to meet the center line.
Next, fold it in half again along the center line.
Now fold it in half horizontally.
Then, make lots of small cuts from the bottom upward.
After making the cuts, open the paper and cut it in half.
Finally, apply glue to the edge without cuts, and wrap it around the origami stem, rolling it up to finish.
Shape and spread the petals while imagining a carnation.
This craft is perfect for kids to practice using scissors, so give it a try together with everyone!
Carnations you can attach to a message card

Here’s an idea for carnations you can make by layering origami—perfect for sticking onto a message card.
For this idea, you’ll use eight 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm sheets of origami paper.
Cut each sheet into a circle, fold it in half, then fold it in half two more times the same way.
Round off the edge opposite the pointed tip, then cut the edge into a serrated (zigzag) shape.
Next, trim about 1 mm off the right edge, fold the paper in half, and open it up.
That completes one piece—make the remaining seven pieces the same way.
Stack and glue all eight pieces together, and your carnation is complete!

Carnations that are also easy to use in bouquets

Let’s make a 3D carnation out of origami.
First, prepare four pieces of origami cut into circles using pinking shears.
Crease all four pieces with radial folds, then use an awl or hole punch to make a hole in the center.
Place the origami onto a bamboo skewer and scrunch it tightly to give it a three-dimensional shape, then thread all four pieces onto the skewer and glue them in place.
Wrap the skewer with green origami paper, attach a folded paper leaf, and you’re done! Make several and wrap them with wrapping paper, and they’ll look like a bouquet!
A carnation made with a single sheet of origami paper and zigzag scissors

When you think of carnations, you picture petals with dozens of ruffled layers, right? Let’s recreate that carnation using origami paper and pinking shears! First, fold the origami paper into a triangle twice, then open and flatten the two pocket-like corners.
Next, flatten the four new pocket-like sections in the same way.
Lift one layer of the flattened part and fold the top triangular tip downward.
As you flip through the paper, you’ll find three more identical sections—fold those tips down the same way.
Fold the paper in half along the center line, then round off the opposite pointed end with scissors and use pinking shears to make a zigzag edge.
Make an inside reverse fold on the pointed section, then open up the folded part that forms the flower—and you’re done.
A carnation with three-dimensional leaves

Here’s an origami carnation with 3D leaves.
Fold the paper into a triangle, then continue folding along the creases.
Fold up the pocket section, and for parts that align with the creases, make firm folds so the shape holds.
When folding the petals, the key is to fold each one carefully.
For the stem, fold the paper along the creases.
Open and fold along the center line of the collapsed section, switching faces as you shape the stem.
Roll the paper into a tube, glue the stem and flower together so they don’t come apart, adjust the shape, and you’re done! Give it a try.
Pop-up carnation card

Would you like to make a pop-up card that opens to reveal carnations? All you need is the card base and two sheets of origami paper.
First, cut the pink and green origami sheets into four equal parts.
You’ll use four pink pieces and one green piece.
Save the remaining pieces to make the stem and leaves.
Fold the origami diagonally into a triangle three times, then fold the top-right edge down to align with the bottom edge.
Using pinking shears, round off the side opposite the pointed tip.
Open the paper, make small cuts, and accordion-fold along the creases.
Make the remaining four pieces the same way, then attach them at the center of the card base to form the carnation.
Finally, add the stem and leaves, write your message, and you’re done!
