[For Seniors] Have Fun with Recreation! Origami Ideas
Origami, which is incorporated into recreational activities at care facilities.
Origami seems familiar to many older adults, as they often folded paper when they were young and it was a common pastime.
Because you can fold while chatting with other seniors, it also helps promote communication!
So this time, we’ll introduce origami that’s perfect for recreation activities for older adults.
Using your fingertips and thinking about what shape it will become when finished also serves as brain training.
Please make good use of these origami ideas in your recreational programs!
[For Seniors] Have Fun with Recreational Activities! Origami Ideas (1–10)
A frog that looks realNEW!

With an idea similar to folding a crane, you can create a lifelike frog.
Fold the origami into a triangle twice, then squash the pocketed sections into squares.
Place the paper with the center facing down, and open and squash the four spots along the lower edges.
Next, fold the left and right edges on the top of every face toward the center line to make creases.
Using these creases, open and squash the boundary between the colored side and the white side so it points downward.
Then fold the top edges of all faces toward the center line once more to form the frog’s legs.
Flip the origami top to bottom, then perform an inside reverse fold to raise the legs, and fold them down at an angle so they form a zigzag shape.
Finally, fold down the top corner of the remaining center section to refine the shape, and you’re done!
3D beer mugNEW!

Here’s an idea for a 3D beer mug that will make you want to tuck in a gift and hand it over for Father’s Day.
The finished size is surprisingly large at 7.5 cm tall and 6 cm wide, so it should fit individually wrapped snacks or small items.
Since this idea is finished in a cylindrical shape, the initial creasing step is important.
It takes a bit of effort, but proceed carefully.
Once you’ve made the creases, fold the sheet to divide it into the yellow liquid section and the foam section.
After that, cut slits into what will be the bottom portion, glue it to form a tube, attach the handle, and you’re done.
Origami: a paper balloon that looks realNEW!

Let’s try making a paper balloon using origami.
First, cut the origami paper into a strip, then mark the designated points, draw curves, and cut along them.
This will transform the strip so that only the central part bulges.
Next, make fine slits along the curved edges to create glue tabs, and attach these sections to form a sphere.
Finally, attach a circular mouthpiece, and you’re done.
Paper balloons usually come in classic colors, but with this idea, you can make one in any colors you like!
Origami Totoro paper balloonNEW!
https://www.tiktok.com/@hoikuno_hondana/video/7501289090969521416Would you like to make a Totoro paper balloon that also looks cute as a decoration? The folding method is the same as the classic paper balloon.
Fold the origami paper into a square twice, then squash the pocketed part into a triangle.
On both sides, fold the two bottom corners up to meet the top corner, then fold the left and right corners toward the center line.
Tuck the two folded corners into the flaps you just made.
Blow air into it to inflate, then attach the ears and facial parts to finish it as Totoro.
Totoro comes in large, medium, and small sizes, so try using different colors and sizes of origami paper.
3D Origami Flower Bouquet

We’ll use origami and colored paper to make three-dimensional flowers and turn them into a bouquet.
Make the flower parts with origami, and use colored paper for the stems and leaves.
Folding the flower parts takes many steps, so it’s a bit challenging, but it’s great for stimulating your brain since it uses fine motor skills.
Let’s make lots of flowers in various colors and create a gorgeous bouquet!
Origami: Butterfly

Even among people who like origami, the way to fold a butterfly is surprisingly little known.
The folding method is a bit complex, but it results in a very charming look.
If you have some craft wire (pipe cleaners) ready, adding antennae is lovely, and drawing patterns on the wings with a pen is also nice.
Feel free to customize it to your liking.
By the way, this butterfly pairs well with artificial flowers and floral decorations.
When you make one, I hope you’ll try displaying it together with them.
Hoppy Frog

This is a cute origami frog that jumps when you press its back.
Fold the paper in half vertically so the edge is on the left, then fold the top-left corner to meet the right edge.
Unfold, then do the same with the top-right corner and unfold.
Fold down along the center line created by the creases, then open and flip the paper over.
Collapse along the creases into a triangle, and fold the corners of the triangle diagonally upward to make the frog’s hands.
Next, fold the lower square section upward to form the body and legs, and you’re done! It could be fun to have everyone compete to see whose frog can jump the farthest.
