Make a carp streamer with dyed paper

Here’s an idea for making carp streamers (koinobori) with dyed paper that’s perfect for older kindergarteners.
At this age, children are becoming more independent and developing a sense of responsibility.
It’s also their final year in preschool or kindergarten, spent with teachers and friends—a precious time to create memories and feel their growth through hands-on projects.
You’ll need dyed paper or calligraphy paper (hanshi), paints, crayons, scissors, glue, and rubber bands.
Both the process of making and the time spent admiring the finished work will become cherished memories.
sensory koinobori

Fun to make for both kids and adults! Here’s a recommended carp streamer (koinobori) craft.
First, put transparent origami or any parts you like into a clear plastic bag.
Next, pour in liquid laundry starch (or glue) and seal the opening with clear tape.
Roll it up into a tube and tape both sides to secure.
Attach a koinobori frame with the center cut out onto the plastic using tape.
Add double-sided tape around the edge, then stick another sheet on top to seal it.
Finally, add the eyes and it’s done! Using stickers or illustrations of your favorite characters inside also looks cute.
Handprint carp streamer
How about making a wall decoration that uses children’s handprints as the scales of a carp streamer (koinobori)? Cut colored construction paper into scale shapes, stamp the children’s handprints on them, and then write their names or add decorations.
If you turn the handprints sideways, they kind of look like fish, don’t they? If you treat the handprints as fish or as mini koinobori and draw eyes and other details on them, you’ll get a fun wall decoration with a little gimmick—small koinobori inside a big koinobori!

Preschoolers wearing samurai helmets and carp streamers
An idea for a wall decoration: cute children peeking out from a carp streamer, each wearing a samurai helmet.
How about having the kids make the carp streamers themselves? Using colored construction paper, they can cut out the shape of a koi nobori and add details by sticking on eye and scale stickers or drawing them.
Then, place each child’s photo onto the koi nobori on the wall and top it with an origami samurai helmet! The children will likely be delighted to see themselves riding on the streamers they made.

Must-have decorations for Children’s Day are carp streamers and samurai helmets.
Here’s an idea that combines both: display a carp streamer wearing a helmet.
Carp streamer decorations have a certain cuteness, while helmets give off a strong, heroic vibe.
A carp streamer with a little helmet perched on its head looks both cute and cool—something kids are sure to love.
It would also be great for each child to make their own carp streamer and helmet in any colors they like.
It’ll turn into a colorful and wonderful wall display.
Koinobori garland
When we think of big events in May, Children’s Day comes to mind.
Many places use carp streamers (koinobori) as wall decorations.
Instead of just making koinobori and sticking them on the wall, how about turning them into a garland? Cut colorful construction paper into the shape of koinobori, draw the eyes and scales, connect them with raffia ribbon (suzuran tape), and hang them on the wall.
For the scales, you can draw them, paste on cut pieces of origami, or use a sponge to stamp them.
It would be great to make them together with the children and create a garland of many koinobori!
A carp streamer made by combining everyone’s scales
This is a wall decoration idea where each child makes a scale for a carp streamer and then attaches it to a large carp streamer.
Give each child a scale-shaped piece of construction paper and have them color the scale in their favorite colors.
They can use crayons or colored pencils, or dab on colors with stamps.
Once the scales are finished, stick them onto the large carp streamer base one by one to complete a big carp streamer!
