[Childcare] Recommended for 1-year-olds! Christmas cake craft ideas
An essential part of Christmas: the Christmas cake!
The classic is a white whole cake topped with strawberries and Santa, but these days there are many variations, like Yule log roll cakes and Santa cupcakes.
In this article, we’ll share ideas for making Christmas cakes.
These are geared toward one-year-olds, so the focus is on decoration, but we’ve gathered activities they can enjoy.
Please feel free to use them during your December craft time.
Because items made by children are treated as “artworks,” we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

Strawberry cake made with stamps and crayons

Recommended for 1-year-olds! Here’s a fun cake craft that uses stamps and crayons.
Prepare cake-shaped construction paper, a backing sheet, glue, crayons, a sponge attached to a chopstick, and paint.
First, glue the cake shape onto the backing sheet.
Dip the sponge in paint and stamp decorations onto the cake.
Finally, use your favorite crayons to draw patterns on both the backing sheet and the cake—that’s it! Applying glue to the backing sheet is fun too, so be sure to try making this together with the children.

Prepare colored construction paper, tissue paper, pom-pom balls, a craft punch, crayons, scissors, and craft glue.
First, glue colored paper cut into a sponge-cake shape onto your base.
Next, tear the tissue paper into small pieces and crumple and glue them on.
Finally, decorate with pom-pom balls to finish! We also recommend adding a chocolate plaque made from colored paper or cute accents using a craft punch.
Colorful cake made with a kitchen sponge
https://www.instagram.com/p/CW5KF4YPhP8/We’re introducing a colorful “cake” made from kitchen sponges.
What you’ll need: sponges, decorative materials like lace and artificial flowers, and craft glue.
First, attach lace or ribbon around the sponge.
If you stick them on to look like whipped cream, it turns out really cute! Next, choose your favorite artificial flowers or other decorations and glue them onto the sponge.
It’s best for teachers or guardians to use the craft glue together with children so the project can be done safely.
Finally, insert a sticker or similar item that looks like a chocolate plaque into the sponge, and you’re done!
Cute cakes made with sticker pasting

What you’ll need: sticker paper, Christmas-themed illustrations, parchment paper, white drawing paper, and a cake-shaped backing sheet.
First, copy the Christmas illustrations onto the sticker paper.
Next, cut around the illustrations with scissors.
If you stick the cut-out stickers onto parchment paper beforehand, it’ll be easier for kids to use them.
Finally, freely place the stickers on the cake-shaped backing sheet—and you’re done!
Let’s draw a Bûche de Noël with a fork
https://www.instagram.com/p/C0bb6NjpYjj/Here’s an idea for creating a Bûche de Noël using a fork.
You’ll need white drawing paper, brown-toned paints, a fork, decorative stickers or colored paper, double-sided tape, and scissors.
First, squeeze brown paints randomly onto the white paper.
Having a range—like dark and light browns—lets you enjoy how the colors blend! Next, use the fork to spread the paint horizontally, then let it dry and cut it out.
Finally, attach paper to the cut ends to show the cross-section, draw the spiral pattern, add decorations, and you’re done.
Fluffy whipped cream fruit cake

First, cut the cake base out of construction paper.
Use a pen to draw lines to separate the top decorating area and the sides.
Prepare plenty of paper fruits as well, and let the children “buy” their favorite fruits.
Mix shaving foam and glue at a 3:1 ratio to make the cream, then spread it over the decorating area of the base.
Place the purchased fruits on the cream, and it’s done! You can also sell little Santa decorations for them to add—this will make it even cuter.
Giant Christmas cake
https://www.tiktok.com/@nakamurahoikusho/video/7303774201507220738Here’s an idea for a giant Christmas cake that everyone can enjoy making together.
As preparation, roll cardboard into a spiral to create a large cake base.
Spread glue over the surface, and have the children stick on cotton and colorful crumpled tissue paper.
They’ll have fun crumpling the tissue paper and decorating however they like.
You can also add leaves, twigs, acorns, and pine cones collected on a walk! The cake can be any size, but making it bigger might be more fun since the kids can add even more decorations.
