Recommended classical masterpieces for background music: soothing classical music (21–30)
Suite bergamasque, No. 3: Clair de LuneClaude Debussy

Among Claude Debussy’s works, the Suite bergamasque is known for its accessible, familiar character.
One of its movements is especially memorable for its gentle, beautiful melody that seems to depict a moon faintly floating in the night sky.
It’s a dreamy, exquisite piece that unfolds a mysterious scene of the moon suspended in a quiet night.
Published in a revised edition in 1905, this piece has been featured not only in classical concerts but also frequently in films and commercials.
Its mystical atmosphere makes it perfect for a calm autumn night—highly recommended for anyone who wants to spend a leisurely, unhurried time.
GavotteFrançois-Joseph Gossec

Originally a graceful dance that is also performed in ballet music, the gavotte began as a kind of folk dance by rural peasants from regions of France.
Its distinctive character, in a lively 4/4 or 2/2 meter yet with an air of refinement, may stem from its role as a French court dance from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
The most famous piece is a short work composed by François-Joseph Gossec.
With its slightly comical flavor, it could make charming background music for a young child’s birthday party.
Enigma Variations ~ NimrodEdward Elgar

One of the signature works by British composer Edward Elgar—also known for “Pomp and Circumstance”—is his orchestral set of variations, the Enigma Variations.
The piece is notable for its unique origins: it was inspired by Elgar’s interactions with his friends and grew out of an improvisation.
The Ninth Variation, dedicated to deep friendship, begins with a quiet string harmony and gradually builds to a grand emotional climax that deeply moves listeners.
This solemn and beautiful melody has been cherished as music emblematic of ceremony and visual storytelling, having been performed at the 1997 funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, and quoted in the film Dunkirk.
Its dignified, reverent tone makes it an ideal choice for focused work or as calming nighttime background music.
ZigeunerweisenPablo de Sarasate

An impactful opening is often heard in scenes featuring surprising expressions, whether in parodies or dramas.
That makes sense, because Pablo de Sarasate—the Spanish composer and violinist—himself seems to have been quite flamboyant and rather extreme.
The title also means “Gypsy Melodies.” Since the piece has a strong punch, it’s perfect as a sound effect for shocking scenes and similar BGM.
Pachelbel’s CanonJohann Pachelbel

This is a work by Johann Pachelbel in which three violins play as if chasing a beautiful melody.
Its hallmark is the way the lines are layered upon one another.
Although there are no lyrics, the gentle, harmonious sonorities feel like a tender conversation, softly enveloping the listener’s heart.
Composed in the late 17th century, it became internationally famous after a June 1968 recording conducted by Jean-François Paillard.
It also gained wider recognition through its use in the 1980 film Ordinary People, and it’s now well known as wedding background music.
Its soothing, steady rhythm and seemingly endless, beautiful melody make it perfect for focusing on work or study.
It may be just the piece for those who want to clear their minds and approach things with calmness.
