Take-Home Craft Ideas for Winter: Perfect for Day Services for Seniors

Many people enjoy doing crafts at nursing homes and day service centers, don’t they?

This time, we’re introducing craft ideas for seniors to make in winter that they can take home from day service!

We’ve gathered easy-to-prepare projects, including those that use recycled materials and supplies from 100-yen shops.

When it comes to crafts, aside from large decorations to hang on the wall, most items can be taken home.

More intricate projects that require fine motor skills may take several days to complete, but the sense of accomplishment and joy when they’re finished is exceptional.

Of course, there are also cute crafts that can be made in a single day, so please use these ideas as a reference for craft activities at nursing homes and day service centers.

[Paper-cutting] Snowman Santa

Papercut Art: Snowman Santa [Torn Paper Collage]
[Paper-cutting] Snowman Santa

A snowman Santa made with papercutting that captivates with the beauty of its silhouette and playful use of color.

Using a template, cut out the shape of the snowman Santa, then apply torn red paper for the hat and outfit to give it a Santa-like look.

The key is the contrast between the clean outline and the rough texture of the torn-paper collage, which creates a warm expression.

Adding the hat’s trim or a snowy background will enhance the wintry feel even more.

The mood changes with your color choices and the size of the torn pieces, making it perfect for a brain workout.

A winter craft idea that sparks creativity.

Let me show you how to make a cute snowman ornament with just a few simple steps.

Fold the two bottom corners of a clear bag into triangles and tape them down, then stuff the bag with white cotton and seal the opening.

Fold the left and right corners of the sealed opening into triangles and tape them as well.

Next, twist two pipe cleaners together to make a scarf, wrap it around the middle to cinch the bag, and shape it into a snowman.

Use round stickers for the eyes and nose, draw the mouth with a pen, and finish by adding a paper hat.

Thread a string through the scarf, and you can hang it on your tree.

Swaying Snowman Wreath

[Christmas Craft] Easy with a paper plate! A cute Christmas wreath with a wobbly, rocking snowman
Swaying Snowman Wreath

Let’s make a wreath you can enjoy displaying not only at Christmas but throughout the winter.

The main motif is a snowman, so the key is to keep the edges rounded and make everything as circular as possible! You’ll need a paper plate, colored construction paper, masking tape, jute twine, fishing line (monofilament), paints, oil-based colored pens, a snowflake-shaped craft punch, double-sided tape, a utility knife, and scissors.

Instead of finishing it in a single day, aim to complete it over two to three days—you’ll be able to take your time and focus on the details.

Give it a try!

Parade – Sharou

Let’s make an ema (votive plaque) by hand using interlocking foam mats you can buy at 100-yen shops.

First, cut the foam mat into the shape of an ema.

Next, wrap yarn around your fingers to make several loops, slide them off your fingers, and tie the center with another piece of yarn.

Use double-sided tape to attach the knot to the ema, then cut through the looped parts with scissors.

Trim the yarn to even out the length, then use felt pieces to add the face and patterns to create a daruma.

Punch a hole at the top of the ema, thread a twisted red-and-white chenille stem (pipe cleaner) through it, and you’re done.

Write your wish on the back and display it.

‘Sorry for Being Cute (feat. Kopi)’ – HoneyWorks

Let me introduce an idea for making an ema plaque out of construction paper.

First, cut out the parts from the paper: the ema plaque, Mt.

Fuji, the zodiac animal, and plum blossoms.

After you paste these together to complete the ema, write your wish on Mt.

Fuji to finish it off.

This idea works for any zodiac year, so it’s handy to remember.

You might also try using New Year–themed stickers instead of plum blossoms.

Draw the animal’s face and patterns with a pen.

If you make it a bit larger, it will be easier to write your wish.

New Year’s arrangement with 100-yen shop artificial flowers

New Year’s arrangement with 100-yen shop artificial flowers

It’s long been a tradition to tidy up and decorate with fresh flowers for New Year’s to welcome the Toshigami (New Year deity).

You can easily enjoy making a gorgeous New Year’s decoration using artificial flowers from the 100-yen shop.

Arrange your favorite artificial flowers on a base.

The key is to decide placement while considering the size, shape, and color of each flower, creating a balanced composition.

Incorporating red and white or gold may enhance the New Year’s feel.

Filling gaps with small artificial berries or leaves can add volume and make the arrangement look more festive.

New Year wall decoration

[New Year] Let's make New Year decorations out of paper. 🎍
New Year wall decoration

First, make the base by diagonally attaching reversible red-and-gold crepe paper onto a rectangular sheet of black construction paper.

Then, decorate by adding paper flowers, a paper fan, and mizuhiki cords on top.

Create each flower by making the individual parts separately and then assembling them into a single bloom.

Arrange the parts for balance and attach them with a hot glue gun.

Adding gold glitter to the flower centers will give an even more glamorous finish.

Besides pine, bamboo, and plum, there are many flowers perfect for New Year’s, such as chrysanthemums, lilies, and ornamental cabbages, so it’s also recommended to arrange and create your favorite flowers.
