For older kindergarteners: December crafts that 5-year-olds will love — ideas from flat to three-dimensional projects

How about enjoying some fun crafts with children during the winter season? This time, we’re sharing enjoyable craft ideas perfect for five-year-olds, such as Christmas stockings and snow globes made with roll sticky notes, as well as wreaths featuring Santa and reindeer.

These can be made with familiar materials like construction paper, origami paper, and paper cups, so preparation is easy.

Encourage each child to use their imagination and enjoy creating their own original pieces! If you use them to decorate walls and other areas, you can instantly create a festive atmosphere.

Because the children's creations are treated as works of art, we use the term “seisaku” (制作) to refer to them in the text.

Snowflake Tree

How about a snowflake tree as a wall decoration that’s perfect for December’s main event, Christmas? By adding snowflakes with various patterns to the tree, you can create a dazzling Christmas tree! The steps are simple: cut blue-toned construction paper or poster board into a triangle to make the base of the tree.

Next, use origami paper to create snowflake ornaments with paper-cutting.

Once they’re ready, keep sticking them onto the tree.

Finally, attach a ribbon or a snowflake to the top of the tree to make it even more gorgeous!

The way a roly-poly toy moves is super cute, isn’t it? Here’s a roly-poly craft that’s perfect for Christmas.

You can make it easily with a toy capsule, four marbles, and vinyl tape.

Put four marbles inside the toy capsule as the base for the roly-poly, then secure them firmly with vinyl tape.

Wrap the outside with vinyl tape to add color, make a face with construction paper, and it’s done.

Once finished, you could even have a fun contest to see whose roly-poly keeps wobbling the longest!

Wobbly Santa

Christmas craft: Wobbly Santa
Wobbly Santa

Why not make a wobbly Santa Claus ornament that uses the curve created by folding a paper plate in half? It’s simple to make and fun to play with after it’s finished.

To make it, fold a paper plate in half and attach Santa’s hat, beard, and other parts; once you’ve created the face, it’s done! With few steps, it’s easy for children to try.

It’s a simple craft that still lets you add originality—I’d love to see unique Santas lined up around the room.

Christmas boots

[For Santa] Making Christmas boots with construction paper♪
Christmas boots

For many children, the best part of Christmas is the present from Santa.

And to receive that present, it’s important to set out a stocking or boot.

Let’s make an essential Christmas boot out of construction paper.

First, cut the construction paper into the shape of a boot.

Make two pieces in the same shape.

Next, punch holes around the edge of the boot and decorate it with drawings however you like.

Finally, thread yarn through the holes and attach the two pieces of paper together to complete the boot.

You can put things inside it just like a real boot, and if you tie the yarn ends together to make a loop, you can hang it up—another nice touch.

[Christmas Origami] Easy! Cute Christmas Wreath Folding Method - Winter Origami Santa Decoration | Origami Christmas Wreath
Christmas wreath

This is a cute Christmas wreath you can make with origami.

Let’s create perfect-for-Christmas items out of origami, such as the wreath base, Santa Claus, a stocking, presents, a ribbon, and a candy cane.

The steps are simple enough for preschoolers and kindergarteners, so why not have each child make one to brighten up the wall display? By choosing your favorite colors for Santa, you can create your very own original wreath.

If it’s hard to finish in a single day, work on it little by little each day and complete a wonderful wreath.

Hand bell with Santa and reindeer

[Christmas Craft 🎄] Make Santa and Reindeer Handbells with Paper Cups!
Hand bell with Santa and reindeer

Let’s make a handmade handbell using a paper cup! With a little creativity for the parts, you can make both Santa Claus and a reindeer.

First, paint the paper cup with acrylic paint.

Use red for Santa and brown for the reindeer.

Next, cut out the facial parts from construction paper.

For Santa’s nose, using a red round sticker looks cute.

Then, poke a hole in the bottom of the paper cup and thread some jute twine through it.

Tie a knot so it won’t slip out, and attach a small bell to the end of the twine.

On the opposite end, tie it into a loop to make a handle.

Finally, glue on the facial pieces you cut out and use a pen to add details.

Your handbell is complete, with a cheerful jingle!

As children turn five, they’re able to do so much more, aren’t they? For this sock craft, stick pieces of roll sticky notes onto construction paper in any shapes you like.

Using roll sticky notes is recommended because the paper is less likely to tear when you peel them off at the end.

Paint over the roll sticky notes with watercolor or paint, let it dry, then gently peel the notes off.

Add some fluffy trim, and your Christmas stocking is complete! It’s exciting to see what kind of patterns the socks will have.

It also sounds fun to make them in different sizes—big stockings and small ones!
