A song to support recovery from the earthquake disaster. Connecting a circle of reconstruction support through music [Ganbarō Nippon / Let’s keep going, Japan].

[To everyone affected by the earthquake off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture in 2025] We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all who have been impacted by this earthquake.

Earthquakes are one of the natural disasters that cannot be avoided as long as we live in Japan.

Many large earthquakes have occurred in the past, bringing great sorrow and hardship.

Yet each time, support has arrived not only from within Japan but from around the world.

Among these recovery efforts, there has been a great deal of support through music, with musicians across the globe releasing many songs filled with hopes for recovery from the disaster.

“May music help even one more disaster survivor regain their strength…” In this article, we introduce a selection of such songs that embody this sincere wish.

Beyond the cloudsTanimura Shinji

The song by Shinji Tanimura, woven from 825 messages of thoughts for Fukushima, warmly embraces the hearts of the people striving for recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Through natural motifs like the sky and clouds, the hopes of those seeking to overcome hardship and their wishes for renewal are sung over Tanimura’s uniquely grand yet delicate melodic lines.

Released in March 2017 as part of the Challenge Fukushima Project, this work also became well-loved as the 11th installment of Fukushima Prefecture’s documentary animation series “Letters to the Future.” It is a song that stands beside all who hold their hometowns dear, and those who, even while facing adversity, choose to keep moving forward—offering steadfast support to the heart.

OneORANGE RANGE

This song, One, was released in limited quantities at live venues and on the official website as a charity single for the Great East Japan Earthquake.

A portion of the proceeds was donated as relief funds to the affected areas.

Inspired by seeing people working hard in the disaster-hit regions on TV and wanting to do something—to cheer them on—the feelings were put into this song.

It’s a simple yet deeply moving message of support: let’s move forward step by step, steadily.

So that (I/We) can carry/bring happinessUsui Makoto

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck on January 17, 1995.

This song, “Shiawase Hoberu Yō ni” (“To Carry Happiness”), was composed by music teacher Makoto Usui, who was born and raised in Kobe, a city devastated by the disaster.

Ever since, it has been sung in many settings as a symbolic song praying for Kobe’s recovery, and even overseas as a song wishing for the rebuilding of disaster-stricken areas.

Rather than merely comforting wounded hearts, it is a piece that squarely confronts recovery and sorrow, created by someone who personally experienced the earthquake.
