Easy! Costume ideas made with colored plastic bags
At kindergarten and school events where children perform plays, dances, and songs, many kids and parents look forward to wearing wonderful costumes.
But sewing costumes completely from scratch can be a real challenge! So this time, we’re introducing costume ideas made from colored plastic bags.
Colored plastic bags come in a wide variety of colors, pair well with colored tape and ribbons, and are easy to shape just by cutting with scissors and sticking together with clear tape.
They’re also more cost-effective than fabric, which is a nice bonus.
Even if you’re not good at sewing, you can make adorable costumes easily by making the most of the shape of the bags.
Give it a try and create costumes that are perfect for the children.

Easy! Costume ideas made with colored plastic bags (1–10)
Cinderella

The beautiful Cinderella dress you know from Disney.
If you try to make it from scratch with fabric, it’s pretty tough.
But amazingly, you can make it easily with light blue or white colored plastic bags! Rather than making it all at once as a one-piece, it’s recommended to start by creating the top and bottom separately.
If you want to add gathers to the skirt, sleeves, or collar, you can easily create a crinkled gathered look by quickly sticking taut vinyl tape onto the bags.
To prevent each part from coming apart, reinforce every seam from the inside with clear tape after you’re done.
Finally, decorate it as you like with silver tape or foil origami, and you’re finished.
Christmas tree costume

This Christmas tree costume is perfect for a holiday party.
Cut green plastic trash bags to fit the children’s sizes, and trim the hem into jagged edges to resemble a tree.
Use gold vinyl tape to add patterns across the outfit to match the Christmas vibe, and cut an opening for the neck.
After that, decorate it as you like, just as you would a tree, and it’s done! Sewing on various pieces can be a hassle, but with plastic bags you can easily create a glamorous look using stickers and tape, and even if you make a mistake, they’re easy to peel off—highly recommended!
cheongsam (qipao)

You can easily make a glamorous cheongsam dress using colored plastic bags! Cut the bag in half so it forms a dress shape, cut out the neckline, and add a slit at the back of the neck.
Then just use gold vinyl tape to add decorations like buttons while keeping the look of a cheongsam in mind.
If you dress the girls up in it for Halloween or other costume events, they’re sure to love it! You can leave the sides as they are, or if you’re worried about it flipping open, we recommend reinforcing them with cloth duct tape so they don’t open completely.

jinbei

Let’s make a colorful and cute jinbei that’s perfect for summer! To make it colorful, we recommend layering two colored plastic bags.
Create both the top and bottom in this style, and for details like sleeve openings and hems, show only one of the colors at certain points to give it a very stylish finish.
For both the top and bottom, you basically just cut them into the shape of a jinbei, but don’t forget to thread elastic through the waistband of the pants.
Finally, to bring out a festive atmosphere like at a festival, decorate with sparkly tape or paper, and you’re done.
Halloween costume

Here’s a super easy Halloween costume idea you can put together even on Halloween day.
Take colored plastic bags—orange or white work great—fold them in half, and cut openings for the sleeves and neckline with scissors.
That’s pretty much the basic shape done! Next, add jagged cuts along the hem to make it feel more Halloween-y.
Then, matching the color of the bag, stick on a jack-o’-lantern face or a ghost face made from construction paper, and you’re all set! Adjust the length to suit your child’s height.
king

A cool and gallant king who appears at events like school plays.
Let’s make one using colored plastic bags and glittery tape! Use plastic bags in your favorite colors to create the king’s blouse, pants, and cape.
Thread elastic through the waistband of the pants.
To give it a regal look, it’s recommended to stick gold or silver tape on the cuffs and neckline.
When you want to attach small items like the ends of the belt or the cape clasp, use hook-and-loop fastener tape for easy attachment and removal.
You’ll end up with a striking costume that you’d never guess was made from plastic bags!
Demon Slayer: Tanjiro’s haori

Let’s make a haori inspired by Tanjiro Kamado, the main character of the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba that kids love! Prepare two colored plastic bags; green is recommended.
Cut each one into the shape of a haori, trimming openings for the sleeves and so on.
Once cut, join the two pieces together to form a single haori, creating the base.
Then, to complete it, stick on black plastic squares to create a checkered pattern! By changing the bag colors or the pattern, you can adapt it for other characters from Demon Slayer as well.
