We’d like to introduce various flower origami projects especially for seniors.

In Japan, beautiful flowers bloom with each of the four seasons.

In spring, there are cherry blossoms; during the rainy season, hydrangeas; in summer, sunflowers; in autumn, cosmos; and in winter, Christmas roses.

Why not try making seasonal flowers with origami?

We’ve gathered many easy projects so that even beginners can enjoy them.

If you love flowers—or if you’re looking for a fine-motor rehab activity—please join us in creating lovely origami flowers together.

Wisteria flowers brimming with charm

Wisteria blooms beautiful pale purple flowers from mid-April to mid-May.

Countless blossoms hang from its long vines, captivating all who see them.

Let’s recreate that scene as a wall decoration.

Make lots of small petals and stick them onto origami paper shaped like tree branches.

The more petals, the lovelier it looks, so let’s invite seniors to help! For the branches, crumple construction paper first and then cut out the shapes.

Once you’ve made the wisteria maiden and the leaves, attach everything to a large sheet of paper, such as poster paper, to complete the piece.

It’s a charming wall display of a wisteria maiden gazing up at a curtain of wisteria.

Seeing the decorated mural may help some seniors feel the spirit of May.

Koinobori and wisteria flowers

May decorations: carp streamers and wisteria 🎏
Koinobori and wisteria flowers

Wisteria flowers reach their best viewing time from the end of April.

You may have opportunities to go see them with older adults.

Some seniors might look forward to the purple wisteria trellises every year.

Here, we introduce wisteria—the flower that represents May—and carp streamers (koinobori) decorations.

We’ll make wisteria and koinobori out of origami.

There are some steps with fine folds, so seniors who enjoy origami are likely to have fun with this craft.

Once the wisteria and koinobori are finished, attach them to a paper plate.

If you paste a sheet with a sky pattern in the center of the plate, it will look like the koinobori are swimming in the sky.

Cutting out the center of the paper plate to make it into a wreath shape is also lovely.

Bouquet of carnations

The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day.

On Mother’s Day, we give carnations to express our everyday gratitude.

Many seniors have probably received or given carnations on Mother’s Day.

Here’s a craft idea that may bring back memories while you make it.

Crumple origami paper to create carnations.

Doing this expresses the frilly petals of a carnation.

For seniors, gripping the origami also provides a bit of hand exercise.

Make the stem and leaves from construction paper, and attach the carnation flower.

Making several carnations into a bouquet to give as a gift to the seniors’ families would be lovely, too.

Wisteria in a tsumami-zaiku style

Wisteria in a tsumami-zaiku style

These are wisteria flowers made from tissue paper using the tsumami-zaiku technique.

First, stack four purple and four white sheets of tissue paper alternately.

Staple them along the diagonal, then cut out three large squares and two small squares.

Fold each square into a triangle.

Align the folded pieces and clip them together with a clothespin, apply glue to the cut edge, and smooth it with your finger.

Before the glue dries, release them and fold back the edges slightly.

Use a pointed tool to open the pouch-like part and shape it into petals.

Create several strands of these airy, beautiful wisteria flowers in varying lengths and bundle them together.

Swaying hanging ornaments

Swaying hanging ornaments

Here’s an introduction to a cherry blossom hanging decoration that looks beautiful as it sways in the breeze.

Cut origami or construction paper into rectangles and accordion-fold it five times.

Trim any excess and staple the center.

Draw cherry blossom petals on the accordion-folded piece and cut them out.

Apply glue to the center, stick the parts together, and shape it.

Attach a string to the back to finish.

If you make and hang many blossoms, it will look even more lovely.

It seems like you could make plenty of blossoms while chatting with seniors.

Please use this as a reference for making decorations.

Decorations of cosmos flowers and red dragonflies

[Origami, Construction Paper, Paper Tape] Cosmos and Red Dragonfly Decorations (with audio commentary) — Handmade Paper Cosmos and Dragonfly
Decorations of cosmos flowers and red dragonflies

These decorations of cosmos flowers and red dragonflies are perfect for wall displays.

They’re made using strips of origami paper.

You can also use construction paper or paper tape.

Place four strips of paper in a radial pattern, stacking them and gluing them together at the center.

Then fold all the ends toward the center and glue each one down.

That’s all it takes to easily create cosmos with softly curved petals.

For the yellow center, use plastic twine and make it as you would a pom-pom.

Make the dragonflies with two colors of construction paper cut into strips, using the same method.

Cosmos decorations

[Origami] How to Make a Cosmos Decoration
Cosmos decorations

Arrange the cosmos flowers in a circle for a bouquet-like decoration.

The base is made by combining paper folded like a screen, and you should be mindful of creating a rounded shape.

Then, add cosmos flowers made by cutting origami paper, along with decorations like ribbons to make it look like a bouquet, and you’re done.

Since cosmos are pink and white, it might be important to make the base in colors that help those shades stand out.

Using patterned origami paper as well as solid colors can make the result even more festive.
