In senior facilities such as day-service centers, isn’t it common to hold sports days on a regular basis?

Along with everyday recreational activities, try incorporating events that feel like a traditional sports day!

In this article, we introduce familiar sports day events with ideas tailored to the physical and mental conditions of older adults.

Some ideas can even be enjoyed while seated, making them accessible to many seniors.

Use this article as a guide to create a sports day that everyone can enjoy together.

[Elderly Care Facilities] Let’s Have Fun Together! Exciting Sports Day Events (21–30)

Balloon attraction

Day: Serious Sports Festival 2022, Part 2
Balloon attraction

This event is perfect as a sports day recreation for seniors that can be enjoyed easily while seated.

Place a ring on the floor or on a table and set a balloon in the center.

Attach a long string to the balloon, and participants reel in the string to pull the balloon toward themselves.

It’s very safe and allows anyone to take part without strain, which is part of its appeal.

The excitement builds as the balloon gets closer.

The person who catches the balloon first wins, and making it a team competition creates a sense of unity in the venue.

It’s also recommended to try using red and white balloons for the respective teams.

Borrowed Item Race

Let’s take on the challenge with excitement! Here are some ideas for a “borrowing race.” Many of you may already know this as one of the most exciting events at a sports day.

This time, let’s try a thrilling borrowing race.

Set a table 10 meters from the starting line.

Place various items on the table along with lots that have the item names written on them, and you’re all set! Participants move from the starting line to the table, draw a lot, and search for the corresponding item.

Once they have the item in hand, they return to the starting line to finish!

Towel relay with newspaper

2 Recreation Mini-Activities You Can Do with a Newspaper Stick and a Towel
Towel relay with newspaper

Here are two games that use newspapers and are great for getting a large group excited.

The first is the Newspaper Towel Relay.

Have older adults sit in a circle, and use a long, rolled-up newspaper stick to pass a towel to the person next to them.

The person who receives it last should throw their hands up and shout to signal the goal.

The second is the Towel Catch Game.

The person holding the towel throws it toward a teammate, and the teammate catches it with a newspaper stick.

The thrower needs to control the strength of their throw, and the receiver needs to imagine where it will fly in order to catch it well.

Recreational activities that get lots of people involved can spark conversations between those who don’t usually interact.

Enjoy these activities that help expand your circle.

Soran-bushi exercise

[Preventive Care] Super Fun Exercise Singing & Dancing the Soran Bushi! (Brain Training/Easy/Funny)

Let’s take part in the exercise while seated! Here are some ideas for a Soran-bushi exercise.

Warm-ups are important at the start of a sports day, right? How about trying a Soran-bushi routine to support your body, mind, and mental sharpness—and to help prevent injuries? The video features a “modern-style Soran-bushi.” Raise everyone’s spirits by singing together as one and dancing while focusing on the key points! Be sure to give it a try.

Fan Beanbag Relay

Fan Beanbag Relay

Let me introduce a fan-and-beanbag relay that everyone can enjoy.

Have participants sit in chairs in a single row, and use handheld fans to pass along a beanbag.

Because it’s done while seated, even people who find it difficult to stand or move their bodies can likely take part.

Since both the fan and the beanbag are light, it doesn’t require much strength.

And with fans and beanbags, there’s less risk of injury if something is dropped.

Through the relay, people will call out to one another and work together as a team.

It might even spark new interactions.

You can also make it more exciting by forming two lines and holding a head-to-head relay competition.

Otedama Hoi

Otedama Hoi

Here’s a simple recreation activity using a large bath towel and beanbags.

Two people sit facing each other on chairs and each holds an end of the bath towel.

Place several beanbags in the center of the towel.

Working together, the two people shake the towel to build momentum and toss the beanbags toward a target.

It gets exciting when many beanbags land in the target.

Another key point of this activity is cooperation between the two participants.

Older adults can naturally create opportunities for interaction by calling out to each other and working together.

Through this recreation, it’s likely to bring more smiles to older adults.

Tossing balls into a small hole

Tossing balls into a small hole

Let’s try a ball-toss game using a cardboard box and colored balls! Here’s an idea where you aim and throw into small holes.

Normally, in a ball-toss game, you throw small balls into a tall basket and compete on how many you can get in.

This time, we’ll use a flat cardboard box and challenge ourselves to throw balls into small holes instead.

It’s a great way to build concentration and control.

If you don’t have colored balls, you can substitute with beanbags or balls made by crumpling up newspaper.
