This time, we’re introducing logic puzzles designed for older adults.
A logic puzzle is one where you think about why something happens or consider the methods and steps involved.
Making use of your own knowledge and finding hints or trick points in the problem statement are key to solving the puzzles.
Thoughtfully working through logic puzzles helps activate the brain and can also improve concentration and creativity.

A woman living alone reported to the police that she was troubled because things were being thrown into her room through the door mail slot almost every day. According to her, threatening notes, a fruit knife, and even a 10-kilogram dumbbell had been thrown in. There is one strange point in the woman’s testimony. Where is it?

In the testimony of a woman living alone, it says, “All sorts of things are thrown into the apartment through the door mail slot.” Notes with threatening content, a fruit knife, a 10-kg dumbbell… all of these are frightening. However, would a 10-kg dumbbell even fit through a door mail slot? Therefore, the strange point is the “10-kg dumbbell.”
While a woman was relaxing in her hotel room, there was a knock from an unfamiliar man. “Sorry, I thought this was my room,” the man said and left, but the woman contacted security. Why did the woman suspect him?

If you thought it was your own room, you wouldn’t knock.
It may seem like just a simple mistake since the man who came by apologized, saying he had the wrong room. But if he had truly mistaken it for his own room, he wouldn’t have knocked, would he? Because he knocked, the woman found it suspicious and contacted security.
A man was shot to death inside a car. Since there was no gunpowder residue on the man’s gunshot wound, it was concluded that he was not shot at close range but from a distance outside the car. However, there were no bullet holes in the car, and the windows and doors were closed and locked. How was the killer able to shoot him under these conditions?

The answer is: because it was a convertible. You might overthink it since it seems the shot came from far away, yet there are no bullet holes in the car and the windows and doors were locked. But if it was a convertible, you could shoot the victim without leaving bullet holes, even with the windows and doors locked.
[For Seniors] Think and Have Fun: Introducing Brain-Stimulating Logic Puzzles (11–20)
A wealthy man died and left a will. In it, he wrote: “I buried all my assets in a field. Whoever finds it first will receive everything. I buried it in the field of the vegetable that is the odd one out related to water.” In his lifetime, the man grew potatoes, tomatoes, and pumpkins. In which field is it buried?

A hint about the odd-one-out related to water: in fact, vegetables that grow underground sink in water, while those that grow above ground float. Among these, only the potato grows underground, so it sinks. Pumpkins are often thought to sink because they’re heavy, but since they grow above ground, they actually float. Therefore, the odd one out is the potato, and the inheritance is buried in the potato field.
My American friend lives in Tokyo. They messaged me saying, “Let’s meet at a place whose name reads the same from top to bottom and bottom to top.” Where is the meeting place?

The answer is “Akasaka.” When you romanize Akasaka, it becomes “AKASAKA,” and it reads the same from top to bottom (forwards and backwards), doesn’t it?
Taro made his girlfriend Hanako drink a poisoned beverage and killed her, making it look like a suicide. Taro thought he was safe because he wiped off all the fingerprints, but the police quickly realized it was a homicide. Why was that?
Because he even wiped off Hanako’s fingerprints from the glass or bottle that had contained the drink. If Hanako had attempted suicide, her fingerprints should have been on the glass or bottle. Taro, trying to avoid suspicion, went out of his way to wipe off all the fingerprints, but it seems that backfired on him.
A child said they wanted to paint a picture of the sky and the sea, so the mother took paints and a sketchbook and went to the beach with the child. However, when they arrived, they realized that the blue paint was missing. Since blue is a primary color, it can’t be made by mixing other paints. But the child said they could still paint the sea and sky with the paints they had. Why is that?
