Forbidden taleBAND-MAID

BAND-MAID is a girls’ rock band that has consistently remained popular since 2013.
Their hard rock–centered sound is still going strong and continues to earn high praise in the Japanese rock scene.
Among their songs, the one I highly recommend as an impressive challenge to sing is Forbidden tale.
The overall difficulty is high, of course, but the C melody is especially tough.
It features advanced “fakes” (vocal riffs/ad-libs) often used in R&B.
They’re far more difficult than the typical pop-style fakes, so definitely give it a try.
idolYOASOBI

It’s YOASOBI’s 19th digital-only single, released in April 2023.
It was chosen as the opening theme for the TV anime “Oshi no Ko,” and the manga’s original author, Aka Akasaka, reportedly wrote a piece specifically for YOASOBI.
Ayase, YOASOBI’s composer, is also well-known as a Vocaloid producer, and that background really shines through in this track—the construction of the vocal melodies and the vocal processing contain many elements typical of Vocaloid songs.
Singing this live at karaoke as a flesh-and-blood human is quite challenging, I think, but if you study the song thoroughly, definitely give it a try.
Rather than sticking too rigidly to the original’s mechanical feel, it might be interesting to sing it in a more human way.
That said, with this melody, that may be easier said than done…
Refrain of SoulsTakahashi Yoko

The theme song of the animated film Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth.
Even years after the film’s release and the single’s debut, it remains a beloved Evangelion classic alongside A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.
The song begins by singing the chorus melody at a slow tempo, but then the pace suddenly speeds up.
Because the contrast with the beginning is so stark, make sure you don’t get left behind by the tempo—sing it coolly, like the characters who pilot the Evangelions!
My sincere heartAina ji Endo

Aina the End is a singer known for her distinctive husky voice.
After her activities with BiSH, she has earned high acclaim from both the industry and listeners as a solo artist.
This work is fundamentally set in a waltz-like triple meter reminiscent of soul music.
This rhythm is famously difficult for Japanese people.
On top of that, the song contains many long sustained notes, so you can’t rely on speed to cover any weaknesses.
Considering all of this, it’s fair to say the piece is highly challenging and demands solid fundamental vocal technique and a strong sense of rhythm.
love and joyKatō Miriya × Shiina Ringo

When it comes to divas of the late Heisei era, Miliyah Kato is undoubtedly at the forefront.
She has collaborated with many artists and drawn plenty of attention over the years, but Ai-raku stands out for its distinctive musicality even among her works.
This collaboration with Ringo Sheena features a serious melody and a unique vocal delivery infused with R&B elements.
Sheena’s parts lean somewhat jazzy, making this track perfect for showcasing the cool allure of both jazz and R&B.
sunflowerAdo

This is Ado’s 18th digital-only single, released in July 2023.
It was selected as the theme song for the TBS Tuesday drama “18/40: Dreams and Love—If We’re Together.” The song is crafted into a gentle piece that evokes a summer scene with blooming sunflowers.
As for Ado’s vocals in this track, I felt her control of dynamics and the nuanced shifts in vocal technique required for them were exquisite.
After thoroughly familiarizing yourself with the entire song, try singing it while paying close attention to how you shape the dynamics.
Goodbye DeclarationChinozo

Chinozo’s 2020 release “Good-bye Declaration” is a dance track that’s popular on TikTok! Many well-known singers have uploaded their own “tried singing” covers, too.
This song is especially tricky when it comes to nailing the pitch and dynamics.
But once you get those down, it’s a super fun song to sing, so it’s one I definitely recommend for women who are confident with Vocaloid tracks.
To hit the pitches cleanly, it’s also important to find the vocal range that suits you.
Don’t feel tied to the original key—try changing it to the key that fits you best and give it a go!
