SparkleIkuta Rira

This is Rira Ikuta’s fifth digital-only single, released in January 2022.
It was written as the theme song for ABEMA’s dating show “Kyou, Suki ni Narimashita.
Mikan-hen.” Listening to the track, you’re immediately greeted by Ikuta’s stunning high notes in head voice right from the intro, which alone suggests this song will be a formidable challenge for karaoke.
Don’t you feel like just nailing that part would draw envious looks from everyone around you? To sing this song well, the key is how smoothly and cleanly you can switch between chest voice and the falsetto that’s used frequently in the chorus and elsewhere.
Once you’ve got that down, it’s also important in the non-chorus sections sung in chest voice to produce a tone with plenty of higher overtones—something with a sparkling quality.
A good tip is to sing as if you’re placing the sound against your upper palate; that tends to help you achieve this kind of tone.
Give it a try!
dandelionIkuta Rira

This is Lila Ikuta’s eighth digital-only single, released in January 2023; she is also active as ikura, the vocalist of YOASOBI.
By the way, the title “蒲公英” is read as “Tanpopo,” meaning dandelion.
Lila Ikuta has long been praised for her captivating high-tone voice, and that charm is in full effect in this track as well! By skillfully switching between a chest voice that resonates with rich upper overtones and a soft falsetto (head voice), she delivers a brilliant performance.
If you can reproduce this at karaoke, you’re sure to earn admiration from those around you.
But please, don’t strain your throat trying to force the high notes.
In loveHY

The HY songs where Nakasone takes the lead are all high and powerful, aren’t they? Since there are many ballads, I think a lot of people include them in their karaoke repertoire! In this song, it’s a male–female twin-vocal setup, and only the A-melody is sung by the male vocalist, Niizato.
However, the key jumps up from the chorus, so when singing it’s best to avoid using your throat overall.
Nakasone’s charm is that she doesn’t use falsetto for high notes! She sings in chest voice no matter how high the range, so the emotion comes through directly.
The reason I feel like crying no matter which song I listen to was Nakasone’s singing style all along!
LIES GOES ONMay’n

Not only as a singer, but also as a voice actor and musical theater actress, May’n has been remarkably active.
The song featured here, “LIES GOES ON,” was released in August 2023 as her 21st single.
Even in this up-tempo track, you can fully enjoy her powerful and beautifully resonant high-tone voice.
Simply analyzing how she switches between various high registers throughout different sections of the song offers plenty to learn, making it a track I especially recommend that aspiring female singers give a listen to at least once.
Black BirdAimer

It’s the theme song for the 2018 film “Kasane,” which starred Tao Tsuchiya and Kyoko Yoshine in a double lead.
It’s a dramatic, moody track.
If you practice well and nail it at karaoke with no mistakes, it’s breathtakingly cool.
The film also drew attention because the two actresses, who had previously played pure, wholesome roles in youth and school films, took on dark, serious, gritty parts.
Server Downmurasaki ima

Shikon, a female singer-songwriter who gained nationwide popularity with “Masho no Onna A,” may give many people the impression—based on her debut—of producing Japanese-style songs.
However, her roots lie in Western music, and she excels overall at R&B-based tracks.
Among her works, the one I particularly recommend is “Server Down.” It’s a downbeat R&B number, but with sudden bursts into falsetto and frequent use of advanced vocal embellishments (runs/ad-libs), placing its level of difficulty among the highest in Japanese music.

BlessingYOASOBI

This is YOASOBI’s 16th digital-only single, released in October 2022, and it was also issued as a CD single in November of the same year.
It serves as the opening theme for the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.
In addition to the intensely complex, up-and-down vocal melody, ikura’s slightly mechanically processed, inorganic-sounding voice stands out.
If you can fully recreate this in karaoke, you’ll surely earn everyone’s admiration! Master smooth transitions between chest voice and falsetto, and aim to reproduce a mechanically flat delivery with minimal inflection.
Although the song is a bit uptempo, be careful not to rush the rhythm.
