BurningHitsuji Bungaku

Hitsujibungaku is an alternative rock band that has been active since the 2010s.

Their highly sophisticated musicianship has earned them acclaim not only from mainstream audiences but also from critics.

Among their songs, one I especially recommend as being difficult to sing is Burning.

Crafted like Western alternative rock, the track is inherently tricky to lock into rhythm-wise.

There aren’t advanced techniques like vocal runs, but considering the rhythm and groove, it’s a high-difficulty song.

Shut up.Ado

Ado, who made her major debut in 2020 at the young age of 17, became a hot topic.

Her debut song, Usseewa, became a massive hit as her signature track.

The song is especially striking for her androgynous, powerful vocals—her key appeal—and many listeners likely felt at first listen, “This isn’t a song you can sing easily…” The way she switches between various tones, from cool, steady singing to shout-like growls, is incredibly cool.

On top of that, the song’s tempo is very fast and the developments come in rapid succession, so being able to sing this track would undoubtedly look impressive!

This is Lila Ikuta’s eighth digital-only single, released in January 2023; she is also active as ikura, the vocalist of YOASOBI.

By the way, the title “蒲公英” is read as “Tanpopo,” meaning dandelion.

Lila Ikuta has long been praised for her captivating high-tone voice, and that charm is in full effect in this track as well! By skillfully switching between a chest voice that resonates with rich upper overtones and a soft falsetto (head voice), she delivers a brilliant performance.

If you can reproduce this at karaoke, you’re sure to earn admiration from those around you.

But please, don’t strain your throat trying to force the high notes.

LANA is a figure who epitomizes the contemporary R&B scene in Japan.

With her blessed husky voice and powerful vocal ability, she’s gained nationwide popularity with tracks that resonate with gyaru across Japan and B-girls alike.

Among her songs, the one I especially want to recommend is No.

5.

This track leans particularly heavily into hip-hop, featuring plenty of sharp punchlines.

The hook feels like R&B with a strong pop flavor, striking a perfect balance between cute and cool.

It’s YOASOBI’s 19th digital-only single, released in April 2023.

It was chosen as the opening theme for the TV anime “Oshi no Ko,” and the manga’s original author, Aka Akasaka, reportedly wrote a piece specifically for YOASOBI.

Ayase, YOASOBI’s composer, is also well-known as a Vocaloid producer, and that background really shines through in this track—the construction of the vocal melodies and the vocal processing contain many elements typical of Vocaloid songs.

Singing this live at karaoke as a flesh-and-blood human is quite challenging, I think, but if you study the song thoroughly, definitely give it a try.

Rather than sticking too rigidly to the original’s mechanical feel, it might be interesting to sing it in a more human way.

That said, with this melody, that may be easier said than done…

Never Grow Upchanmina

Chanmina – Never Grow Up (Acoustic Version) [Studio Session]
Never Grow Upchanmina

A track by Chanmina, a hugely popular young female rapper.

The mellow vibe, highlighted by acoustic guitar accompaniment and live drums, leaves a strong impression and really brings out the song’s coolness.

One distinctive charm of the piece is the breathy vocal delivery throughout.

Within that, there are moments of powerful phrasing that stand out as especially cool highlights.

There are also several stylish elements worth emulating when singing, such as the transitions from low to high notes and the scooping, catch-in-the-throat vocal inflections.

This track is included on Ryokuoushoku Shakai’s fourth full-length album, “pink blue,” and was released in advance ahead of the album.

When singing the vocal melody, I think the main point to watch out for is how smoothly you can transition into the brief moments of falsetto that pop up here and there.

However, what many Japanese singers may find even more challenging is recreating the slightly bouncy rhythm of this medium-tempo groove.

Make sure to really listen to the backing track and sing while feeling the rhythm and the beat.

If your singing becomes flat, it can spoil an otherwise excellent song.
