October Festival | Hokkai-Gakuen UniversityHokkaido, Sat 10/10–Mon 10/12

At Hokkai-Gakuen University, one of Hokkaido’s most historic institutions, the traditional Jūgatsusai will celebrate its 75th edition. Set on the Toyohira Campus in Sapporo, this three-day autumn festival is brought to life by students. Club exhibitions, food and goods stalls, stage events, and more create a warm, student-led atmosphere. Conveniently located just a one-minute walk from Gakuen-mae Subway Station, the festival welcomes local community members as well. Soten Festival at Hokkaido Information University is an autumn celebration that colors the Ebetsu campus, created primarily by the Student Executive Committee. The 38th edition in 2026 carries the theme “Luminas.” Guided by the spirit behind the theme, two days unfold where students’ creativity and energy converge through food stalls, club exhibitions, and stage events in the auditorium. Visitors can experience the unique, handcrafted feel of a campus festival along with a welcoming atmosphere open to the local community. Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, located on a spacious campus in Obihiro, Hokkaido, has long fostered learning rooted in the vast land as a national university centered on agro-livestock sciences. For two autumn days, the campus comes alive with Chikudaisai, a festival filled with the passion of its students. Marking its 60th year, student-led stage programs and food stalls will enliven the campus, creating a lively atmosphere unique to Tokachi. The event will be held on October 10–11, 2026. I went to the Chikudaisai festival at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine! The food stalls had delicious-looking roasted marshmallows and deep-fried frog!

The Azuma Festival, held by the Faculty of Engineering at Yamagata University’s Yonezawa Campus, is a joint school festival organized with Yonezawa University of Nutrition Sciences and Yonezawa Women’s Junior College, adding color to Yonezawa’s autumn. Students of engineering and those of nutrition and the humanities bring their unique qualities together to create a three-day event open to the community. Food stalls, club presentations, and stage programs line the campus, where the energy of students meets the warmth of the local community in the castle town of Yonezawa.
