Sports day events that both children and adults can enjoy (11–20)
slow cycling contest

Do you know the slow cycling race? It’s a competition done on bicycles, but the rule is that the person who reaches the finish line later wins.
If you get off the bike or put a foot on the ground, you’re disqualified.
Since a bicycle will topple if it stops, you have to inch forward little by little—but that’s easier said than done.
Because speed and body size don’t matter, it’s a fun event where you never know who will win.
There’s also a risk of falling, so don’t forget to wear a helmet!
Barrel Rolling

“Barrel Rolling” is an event where you guide a barrel to the goal while rolling it with two sticks.
It may look easy at first glance, but because the two sticks are unstable, rolling it exactly as you intend can be quite challenging! Setting up a zigzag course with traffic cones can increase the difficulty.
It’s a game that both children and adults can enjoy, so it’s recommended for parent–child events at elementary school sports days or for company sports festivals.
It can also be exciting as a relay, using the barrel in place of a baton.
Kusudama breaking

Kusudama-breaking, where you hit a decorative ball to split it open, is an easy-to-understand and exciting event.
The glittering streamers that burst out make it clear when a team wins, which is a nice touch.
When preparing the kusudama, it’s essential to adjust how much impact is needed for it to open.
Getting it to break with just the right amount of force can be tricky, but to avoid a situation where “no team could break it” on the big day, it’s a good idea to run a few rehearsals beforehand.
Where’s my kid?

I think having events with a strong element of luck makes a sports day more exciting.
So I’d like to introduce “Where’s My Kid?” The rules are very simple.
First, a child hides inside a large cardboard box.
The parent’s job is to find their child who’s hiding in one of the boxes, then give them a piggyback and head for the finish line together.
It’s also fun to tweak the last part into something like a three-legged race.
Another variation is to have the parent hide instead of the child.
It’s also a great idea to let the kids come up with the rules themselves.
Paper Airplane Contest

Paper airplanes are something almost everyone played with as a child.
There are as many ways to fold them as there are people, and the different methods don’t just change how they look—they also affect how they fly and how far they go.
Many of us probably experimented as kids to find the folding style that flies the best.
This is an idea to enjoy those paper airplanes as an event in a mini sports day.
It could be a competition that even people who aren’t confident in their athletic abilities can really enjoy.
Bubble Ball Sumo

This is a sport played wearing bubble balls, a sports toy that originated in Norway.
While soccer using bubble balls is well known, you can also enjoy it with rules similar to sumo.
Players wearing bubble balls collide and try to push the opposing team out of a circle.
Because the rebound force is strong, it’s hard to move as intended, which adds to the excitement.
An important point of this sport is that even with intense collisions, the risk of injury is relatively low.
Fun Relay and Footrace (1–10)
Courier relay

This is a variation on the relay race, one of the most exciting events at sports festivals.
Here, teams of four run together, each member holding one corner of a wooden platform.
Instead of passing a baton, they carry and pass along items placed on the platform.
Because you must avoid dropping the items—not just run fast—the event rewards strategy, such as adjusting your running style.
Increasing the number of items each lap raises the difficulty toward the end.
By balancing stability with speed, teams can strengthen their bonds while aiming for victory.
