[Unique] Fun sports day events that both kids and adults can enjoy

Is a sports day just a test of physical strength? No! With a few clever touches, it can turn into a fun, laughter-filled memory.

Packed with ideas like quirky events anyone can enjoy, and activities for parents and kids to do together, these will liven up your sports day.

Whether you’re athletic or not, these are events everyone can enjoy as a group.

Why not make this year’s sports day unforgettable with some unique programs? As you read, don’t just copy the activities as they are—keep an eye out for ways you might adapt or customize them, and your ideas may grow even more!

Fun Relay and Footrace (11–20)

Hula hoop relay

This is a relay where two people run together inside a hula hoop.

Mark the starting line and the turnaround point, divide into teams, and at the start signal, the first pair from each team runs.

Go around the turnaround point, return to the starting line, and pass the hula hoop to the next pair.

The team whose last pair returns to the start first wins! If you don’t match your speed, you might lose balance and fall, so go at the fastest pace you can maintain together.

At the turnaround point, it helps to have the person on the inside act as the pivot to turn smoothly!

Borrower Competition

I think the scavenger race where participants search for a specified item within the venue and head to the finish line is a classic sports day event.

In this version, however, the prompt is limited to people: participants must find the designated person in the venue and aim for the finish line together with them.

If you make the prompt into a panel that can be worn, it becomes easier for the audience to see, and the person who fits the prompt can also approach the participant.

You can raise the difficulty depending on how you set the prompts, but choosing clear prompts helps the event proceed smoothly.

It would also be fun to include prompts that make the audience laugh from the stands.

Bagworm relay

[New Record] If I can improve my time in the 50m sack race, I’ll totally dominate the obstacle relay, right?!
Bagworm relay

How about adding a cute “bagworm relay,” which looks like little bagworms, as an event in your mini sports day? It’s called the bagworm relay because you wear a burlap sack like a bagworm! Using a large burlap sack—the kind sold at hardware stores for holding coffee beans—you cover about half your body.

Since you can’t really walk like that, you hop your way toward the goal.

Jump big and fast if you can, but be careful—there’s also a risk of falling.

So hurry, but do your best carefully!

Ping-pong ball relay

How about trying a ping-pong ball relay that’s simple yet thrilling? Split into teams, place a ping-pong ball on a ladle, and at the signal “Start!!” the first runner sets off, loops around the turnaround point, returns to the starting line, and passes the ladle to the next person.

It sounds easy, but ping-pong balls are light and slippery, so if you go too fast, they’ll slide off in no time.

It’s a competition that gets exciting because you have to hurry while carefully keeping the ball from falling—striking that perfect balance is the real challenge.

hopping race

Hopping Skill-Up Method! Train Your Sense of Balance! Hopping Breathing Form 1
hopping race

A “hopping toy” is a plaything you ride with both feet together, bouncing along using spring power.

It’s popular as a children’s sports toy because it helps develop balance.

This is a race that uses that hopping toy.

Get on your hopper and, at the signal “Ready, go!”, compete for speed.

If you make small, cautious hops so you don’t fall, you’ll lose; but if you try to cover too much distance in a single jump, you’ll lose your balance and fall, so be careful.

We recommend making the course shorter than a regular footrace.

Teamwork-based sports day events (1–10)

Moving beanbag toss

This is a variation of tamaire, the game where you throw balls into a basket.

One representative wears a basket on their back and runs around during a set time while the opposing team tries to throw balls into the basket.

Since it’s also about cornering the fleeing basket, it’s a game where each side’s strategy can shine.

The more heated the match gets, the more vigorously everyone moves, so please be careful to avoid injuries and have fun.

Balls may spill out of the basket during intense movement, so you might either watch out for that or consider imposing a penalty—it could make things more interesting.

Shedding a snake’s skin

Shedding a snake’s skin

It’s a sport that looks intriguingly odd and helps deepen teamwork.

Participants wear a belt around their waist, and others grab onto it from behind to form a long line.

In that formation, they run to a designated point, and once there, starting from the person at the very back, they lie down on their backs one by one.

When the person who was at the front has managed to lie down, they then stand up again in order from that person onward and head toward the finish as they are.

Because you need to judge when someone has fully lain down or stood up, assigning a referee to each team would likely make the event run smoothly.

Synchronizing breathing and calling out to each other are the keys to victory in this sport.
