Teamwork-based sports day events (1–10)
Cross Tug-of-War

This is a modified version of tug-of-war, where the outcome is usually decided by simple strength.
Ropes extend in four directions from a central ring, and the team that pulls the central section into their territory wins.
In addition to the raw power element of tug-of-war, various strategic elements—such as temporary cooperation with rival teams and creative pulling techniques—are introduced.
Even when there’s a difference in sheer power, a comeback is possible depending on strategy, which helps reduce inequality.
Since cooperation and betrayal are the keys to victory, please be mindful to avoid leaving hard feelings after the match.
Stage of Splendor

A popular sports day event where teams compete to see how many people can fit onto a “flower stage.” It’s a cooperative, strategy-based challenge where tactics and teamwork decide the outcome.
Prepare limited spaces—like a stage platform or hula hoops—that cap the number of people who can fit.
Then, in time with a chant, have participants step onto the space one by one.
If someone is late on the cue, falls out of the boundary, or can’t get on properly, they’re out at that moment.
The final score is the number of people successfully on the stage.
Strategy matters—place sturdier members at the center as pillars and have lighter, more agile members go later, for example.
It’s a great way to boost team cohesion through teamwork.
Water Balloon Splash Ball Toss

At a summer outdoor sports day, I highly recommend adding the “Water Balloon Splash Ball Toss”! Normally, ball toss games use fabric balls, but this version uses water balloons.
Of course, any that miss the basket will hit the ground and burst into a watery splash! But that’s exactly what makes it so fun.
In summer, getting wet isn’t too cold—if anything, it’s refreshing, right? Kids will surely love it.
Just wear swimsuits or water-friendly clothing so you’re fine even if you get soaked, and have a great time!
oblique projectile motion
Let me introduce an oblique-throw relay that’s sure to energize your sports day.
The rules are simple: form teams of four.
Each team holds a blue tarp with a large ball placed in the middle and carries it to the area where a rope is stretched high above.
Working in sync, the four teammates use the tarp to launch the ball so that it goes over the elevated rope.
You must not use your hands to toss the ball—only pull and maneuver the blue tarp to send the ball upward.
After the ball clears the rope, catch it again with the tarp, return, and pass the turn to the next group.
Be careful when carrying the ball as it moves freely across the tarp.
Once the anchor group finishes, you’ve reached the goal.
Coordinate your timing and give it your best!
Five-person, six-legs giant ball roll
At sports festivals, a classic event is the giant ball roll, where teams of multiple people roll a huge ball to race to the goal.
If the standard version feels too easy, how about adding a twist with a “Five-Person, Six-Leg Giant Ball Roll”? Form teams of five, tie their legs together with ropes, and have them roll the giant ball while moving in a five-people-six-legs formation.
Since their legs won’t move as freely, the team’s coordination is tested even more! It’s a great event for strengthening bonds, so consider adding it to your sports day program.
Ball Carrying UNO

Here’s an idea for adapting UNO, the well-known board game, into a ball-carrying relay.
Form teams in a circle, with each person holding a ball.
Appoint a caller to give instructions—such as “skip” or “one bounce”—and everyone passes or moves the balls according to the commands.
The rules are simple, but you can increase the challenge by speeding up the instructions, and it’s fun to experience teamwork as you achieve goals together.
If it’s a team competition, you can spice it up with original rules, like declaring the team that never drops their ball the winner.
It’s also great for sports day events.
Trash-picking competition

This is a competition where teams pick up litter scattered around the venue, and the winner is determined by their performance.
Various rules can be used, such as racing to see who finishes picking up garbage the fastest or competing over how much trash is collected within a time limit.
It has also been adopted in volunteer settings as “SpoGOMI,” where points are assigned based on the type of litter, and teams compete for the highest score.
Inspired by this event at a sports day, it could be fun to try it outside the venue as well.
A key point is that, through sports, participants can learn about environmental awareness and initiatives.
