Wordplay & Quiz Game (1–10)
High-Energy Prince Shōtoku Game
As we become adults, we tend to compliment our friends face-to-face less often.
For people like you, I recommend the “Age-Age Prince Shōtoku Game.” In this game, you role-play as Prince Shōtoku, who is said in legend to have been able to listen to ten people at once, and you try to distinguish multiple compliments being said simultaneously.
Because you have to seriously listen to people praising you, it’s a slightly embarrassing, blush-inducing game.
Atama-Oshiri Game
It’s a game where you’re given the first and last letters, and you fill in the letters in between to make a single word.
The twist is a 10-second time limit.
With the deadline closing in… doesn’t just imagining it make you a little nervous? You might draw a blank on answers that you’d normally think of right away.
It’s perfect for lively, friendly fun with everyone chatting and laughing together.
If someone comes up with a long word, it’s sure to make the room even more excited.
Word Wolf Game
A psychological “Word Wolf” game! First, prepare one card for each player.
Write the same word on all the cards except one, and write a completely different word on that single remaining card.
Then everyone takes a card and talks about the word written on their card.
The goal is to figure out who has the card with the different word.
At first, even if your word is the odd one out, you won’t realize it.
But if, during the conversation, you suspect you might be the different one, deliberately join in and try to confuse the others! If you successfully mislead everyone and no one thinks you’re the odd one out, you win.
If the others correctly identify the person with the different word, that person loses.
Wordplay & Quiz Games (11–20)
Rhythm 4 Game
I bet a lot of people love the nostalgic games they played back in their school days.
One game I recommend is the “Rhythm 4 Game.” It originally became popular thanks to the TV show ‘Let’s Go to School!’ and many people probably remember playing it as students.
Just playing it brings back old memories, so it’s sure to liven things up.
Magical Banana
It’s a game that originated from a variety show, where players link words inspired by the previous person’s word in time with a rhythm.
The key is to speak in rhythm, and under the pressure of a time limit, your ability to calmly come up with words is put to the test.
It’s also fun to split into teams and compete to see how long you can keep the rally going; in that case, not only each person’s creativity matters, but also choosing words that make it easier for the next player to respond.
Since the game progresses using only words, another advantage is that you can start easily as long as you have enough people.
A game where whatever you say gets answered with “XX.”
A game where you just reply with a set phrase no matter what someone says—what’s fun about that? you might think.
It seems easy because you just keep replying with the same words in a snappy rhythm.
But the prompts you’re given include little traps—words that make you stumble.
For example, if you’re told, “No matter what you’re asked, reply with ‘furabonogamu’,” you feel like you could do it, right? But when you keep answering quickly and rhythmically, some part of you gets led astray by the phrase ‘furoba no gomu’ (bathroom rubber), and you trip up.
It’s a simple yet tricky and fun game.
Rotational Shiritori
Shiritori is a classic, casual game for killing time.
But it can drag on endlessly and get messy when you don’t know when to stop.
In contrast, this “Rotational Shiritori” ends neatly and is played for speed.
You set a fixed number of turns in advance, and the game must come back around to end exactly on the starting word.
In other words, you choose the number of words beforehand, and after one full round, the last word must end with the same character the first word started with.
For example, if the shiritori starts with “a,” the last character must also be “a.” It’s smooth at first, but toward the end you have to connect words while considering the remaining count and possible words—making it a great brain workout as well.
