[For Preschool Teachers] Recommended Costumes for Halloween
Last updated:

Riding the Halloween boom in Japan, more and more nursery schools and kindergartens are likely holding Halloween parties.

Many teachers are probably doing all sorts of preparations to delight the children.

Among those preparations, some teachers may be wondering: What should we do about Halloween costumes?

This article introduces recommended Halloween costumes for nursery and kindergarten teachers who are facing that very question.

We’ve gathered costume ideas that won’t scare the children too much and will let them have fun.

Together with the kids, teachers—please enjoy the Halloween spirit to the fullest!

[For Childcare Workers] Recommended Halloween Costumes (1–10)

witch

Speaking of witches, there’s Shiki Theatre Company’s WICKED—of course it’s a hit on Broadway, too.

When you think about the witch’s iconic spooky pointed hat and all-black outfit, you realize a witch costume isn’t that intimidating—basically, that’s it, right? If you’re going for it, grab black tights and black gloves, too, and go head-to-toe in black.

You can also find wizard staffs in the party goods section, so pick one up if you can! A slightly overdrawn bright red lipstick can really bring out the Halloween vibe.

Alice

Alice, the girl who appears in the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland published in 1865 by the British author Lewis Carroll, is characterized by her blonde hair, blue dress, and white apron.

During the busy Halloween season, an easy Alice costume can help lighten the load for childcare workers.

You don’t have to buy a store-bought Alice outfit—just stick playing-card decorations like spades and hearts onto a white, light blue, or blue dress, and you can quickly create an Alice costume.

By the way, if you use a skirt, choosing one with large frills is a key point to make it look more like Alice.

pumpkin

When it comes to Halloween symbols, nothing beats the pumpkin head—the jack-o’-lantern with that menacing, glaring expression.

If you have an orange shirt or sweater, you can instantly make a costume top.

Just cut out the pumpkin head’s facial parts from black construction paper—or black felt if you want something sturdier—and attach them to the clothing.

Add a green collar at the neckline to boost the Halloween vibe even more.

You could probably make enough for all the preschool teachers without it taking too long.

Perfect for anyone short on time but still wanting to do something festive!

Minnie Mouse

Every year on Halloween night, Shibuya’s scramble crossing is in the spotlight.

Amid all the pretty scary zombie costumes, spotting someone dressed as Mickey or Minnie Mouse is a relief.

Mickey’s power is amazing! A simple Minnie Mouse costume that everyone loves might be easier than you think.

Layer a red shirt over a long-sleeved black shirt.

Make the white buttons and collar out of felt.

Put on white gloves and add Minnie ears, and you’re done.

It would be fun for all the teachers to match, too.

And of course, enjoy the time you spend making the costumes!

prison uniform

A prisoner outfit is a very simple costume you can create just with striped clothing, making it perfect even during the busy Halloween season.

You don’t need to buy special costumes—if the preschoolers already have striped shirts, that’s all you need, so it’s easy on the wallet.

When everyone dresses as prisoners, you can make a fun twist like “Where’s Wally?” by having just one person wear red-and-white stripes while the others wear black-and-white stripes.

Plus, since it’s a cosplay you can do with everyday clothes and it’s easy to move in, the preschoolers are sure to love it!

devil

What character comes to mind when you hear “demon”? Maybe Ryuk, the Shinigami from Death Note.

Those bulging eyes, the big mouth, the spiky hair, the all-black outfit—if a man’s doing cosplay, copying Ryuk might be the quickest route.

For women, a cute demon could be great too.

There’s also demon cosplay inspired by a black angel, so are black wings on the back a must? A softly flared black skirt with silver accessories will boost the demonic vibe.

You could also mimic Demon Kogure’s makeup to get some laughs from the kids!

Snow White

The Snow White costume, popular with children, is perfect for teachers too! The bright red ribbon, blue dress with a white collar, and black bobbed hair are distinctive.

It’s an outfit that expresses kindness and innocence, so kids will feel comfortable approaching you.

You can capture wonderful memories with the children during photo time as well.

Strike a pose with the skirt spread out, and you’ll look as if you’ve stepped right out of a picture book.

One of Snow White’s charms is that just putting on the costume naturally brings a smile to your face.

While enjoying the Halloween party, you’ll likely deepen your bond with the children too.
