Simple Minnie-style skirt

Simple Minnie-style skirt

Let’s make a Minnie-inspired outfit with a cute tiered mini skirt! For the lower tier, use two pieces of fabric measuring 18 cm in height; for the upper tier, use one piece of fabric measuring 24 cm in height.

Adjust the width to fit the waist.

Sew the two 18 cm pieces together to connect them, then roughly stitch along the top edge with a sewing machine.

Pull the thread to gather the fabric, then sew it to the 24 cm piece and remove the gathering thread.

Sew the side seams together, and finally thread elastic through the waistband to finish.

It’s an adorable skirt that’s perfect for everyday wear, too!

Lace gathered skirt

Lace gathered skirt

Here’s an idea for a gathered skirt with cute lace trim at the hem! Minnie’s skirt doesn’t have lace, but adding it as a custom touch makes it more glamorous, so I recommend it.

You can gather with a sewing machine, but this version is made by cutting the skirt slightly wider, then threading elastic through the waistband and cinching it tight.

It’s easy to adjust the size, so even if you’re worried about getting the exact measurements right, it should be an approachable project.

tutu dress

Tutu dresses look difficult to make at first glance, don’t they? But with the right idea, they’re actually very easy.

First, buy a black mesh tube top from a store.

Prepare red tulle fabric, cut plenty of it into long, narrow strips.

Then simply tie the tulle strips onto the holes of the tube top.

That’s all—your lovely tutu dress is complete.

For the white polka dots, sew on felt pieces you can get at a 100-yen shop.

Since the skirt is see-through, I recommend wearing a petticoat or something similar underneath.

Speaking of Minnie Mouse, her trademark is a red skirt with white polka dots! So why not try making a gathered Minnie-style skirt? You’ll need to be able to use a sewing machine, but the process is very simple: sew the skirt portion and the waistband separately, then gather the skirt and attach it to the waistband.

This version is sized for children, so adults should adjust the measurements to fit themselves.

It’s perfect for costumes, and it could even work as everyday wear.

weightless skirt without pannier

Here’s an idea for creating a cute, softly flared skirt silhouette without using a petticoat.

First, cut your fabric according to the pattern.

Prepare two pieces each of 80-denier tulle, outer fabric, and lining.

Sew each pair together, leaving out the section where the zipper will go.

Layer them so that the tulle is on top, then the lining, then the outer fabric.

Sew together at the hem, attach the waistband, and you’re done! The shape is super cute, so try making it with red fabric with white polka dots.

Earth-color Minnie

Minnie’s skirt is usually red with white polka dots, but this is an idea to intentionally make it in earth tones.

Lately, muted colors have been very popular in general, and some parents may prefer to dress their children in calmer shades rather than primary colors.

So why not try making a gathered skirt in beige with white polka dots? The skirt itself is cut straight, and you create the gathers with an elastic waistband—it’s a basic method that anyone can do easily.

Adding lace to the hem would be adorable, too.

Drawers

If you want to faithfully recreate Minnie Mouse’s outfit, why not try wearing drawers under the skirt? Drawers are a type of undergarment shaped like short bloomer-style pants.

Some have lace at the hem, which looks adorable on little kids.

If you make Minnie’s red-and-white polka dot skirt a bit shorter and intentionally let the drawers show, it will bring you closer to the look of the real Minnie.

puff sleeve dress

puff sleeve dress

How about making a super cute puff-sleeve dress for kids as a Minnie-inspired costume? You can use red fabric with white polka dots for the entire dress, or make the bodice in black and switch to the polka dots from just under the chest—that would be adorable too! With kids’ costumes, cuteness is important, but ease of wear is also key.

If the sleeves are hard to get into or it’s uncomfortable, they might refuse to wear it.

A dress style is great because they can just slip it on, and if you make it a little roomy, it’ll be easier for them to move around.

A pannier you can make without sewing

When you add a petticoat, a skirt gets that cute, fluffy silhouette, right? But if you only wear it for costumes, you might hesitate to buy a store-bought one or make it yourself.

So here’s a petticoat you can make without sewing! The idea is to hang slightly inflated plastic bags from an elastic waistband.

Sounds too simple? But when you put a skirt on over it, it fluffs out nicely and actually works as a petticoat.

It does make a crinkly noise, so keep that in mind, but for events like school festivals or recitals, it’s low-cost and just perfect.

I want to dress up as Minnie Mouse, but making a costume by hand is hard.

In that case, I recommend coordinating an outfit with red fabric and white polka dots! Many people associate red with white polka dots with Minnie Mouse, and I think it makes a perfectly lovely costume.

Plus, if you buy ready-made items, you can wear them as everyday clothes too, which is economical.

Add a Minnie Mouse pouch or a headband with Minnie ears, and enjoy an easy costume!
