Great for gifts, too: Easy DIY scrunchie tutorial (1–10)
Finger-knitted ribbon scrunchie

You don’t need a sewing machine or even a needle—this scrunchie is made with ribbon, and amazingly, you can make it using just your fingers.
First, create a soft loop, then insert your index finger and thumb into the loop, pull the ribbon through, and continue to make a chain stitch.
Thread a hair elastic through the finished chain and tie it off to complete.
Even if you’re not good at knitting or sewing, this finger-knitted ribbon scrunchie is easy.
The look changes a lot depending on the ribbon’s length and width, so you might find yourself wanting to make it with all kinds of ribbons.
It’s also a great project to do with kids.
Fluffy finger-knit scrunchie

You can find many kinds of yarn at 100-yen shops, and this idea uses the fluffy, long-pile yarn you often see in winter to make a finger-knitted scrunchie.
The method is very simple: just work a round of single crochet with your finger all the way around a looped hair tie.
Because the yarn’s pile is random, you won’t notice if the stitches aren’t perfectly even due to slight looseness or pulling too tight.
It’s an easy project even for those who aren’t confident with crafts.
The look changes depending on the yarn, so try making them with different yarns!
frilled scrunchie

Why not try making your own scrunchies using frill tape and ribbons? Since you use tape that already has a frilled shape, it’s easy to create cute scrunchies with plenty of volume.
You can buy frill tape with overlapping lace and ribbon at 100-yen shops, and if you have lots of leftover lace or ribbon at home, you can layer them to use like frill tape.
It’s also easy to try because you can wrap the ribbon and hand-sew it.
Frilly scrunchies are adorable even worn on your wrist—give it a try!

Volume scrunchie

How about making a voluminous scrunchie that looks striking and has a strong presence? A regular scrunchie is made by turning a tube of fabric into a loop and threading elastic through it, but this volume scrunchie isn’t difficult—you simply use a wider piece of fabric and add one extra step.
After turning the wide, tubular loop of fabric right side out, sew two lines down the middle, thread elastic between them, and then close the opening used for inserting the elastic.
Not only does it stand out as a hair accessory, it also makes a statement when worn around the wrist.
Small children’s scrunchie

When you want to give a scrunchie to a child with long hair, adult-sized ones can be a bit too big—they may slip off when worn on the wrist or feel bulky and get in the way.
Why not make a smaller scrunchie to match your child’s wrist size and hair volume? The method is the same as a regular scrunchie; you just change the fabric dimensions and the length of the elastic inside.
As a guideline: for upper elementary to adults, use 60 cm of fabric length; for lower elementary, 55 cm; and for preschoolers, 50 cm.
Try making one with leftover fabric you have at home.
Fluttering scrunchie

The fluttery scrunchie has more volume than a regular size, so it really makes your hairstyle stand out.
It also makes a wonderful gift.
It’s a present that people of all ages and genders will appreciate.
If you make it by hand, you can choose fabric that suits the recipient, which is great.
Cute patterns are lovely, and simple, mature designs are nice too.
As long as you have a sewing machine, it’s easy to make, so it’s perfect for beginners at crafts.
Why not give a one-of-a-kind handmade scrunchie as a gift to someone special?
Slim scrunchie made with ribbon

Here’s how to make a thin, simple scrunchie using 2 cm-wide ribbon.
Place two ribbons right sides together and sew both long edges.
Turn it right side out, thread the elastic through, and sew the opening closed—that’s all there is to it.
However, because the ribbon is narrow, turning it right side out can be a bit tricky and requires a knack.
Leave the sewing threads at the top and bottom slightly long, and use those threads with a yarn tapestry needle or an elastic threader to guide them to the opposite opening as you turn the tube right side out.
Be careful not to pull too hard, as the thread can snap; the key is to turn it slowly and gently.
