Handmade Hair Accessories for Shichi-Go-San! Ideas Using Tsumami Zaiku and Artificial Flowers (31–40)
Hanging ornament with bells

This is a cute dangling hair ornament that jingles with little bell sounds every time you move.
First, make a small loop at one end of each of three wires, then bundle the three together and arrange them like a rake.
Thread string through them, apply glue, and let it dry.
Next, use chirimen fabric and the tsumami-zaiku technique to create heart-like shapes.
Prepare about 15 pieces, then attach them to three strands of metallic yarn.
Add bells, combine this with the U-pin attached to the wire piece you made first, and it’s complete!
Red ribbon headband

Why not try making a headband with a big red bow using a store-bought headband as the base? Prepare your favorite red fabric and sew it into a long, narrow tube.
Since this will be slipped over the store-bought headband, cut the fabric width to match it.
Next, sew a rectangular piece of fabric into a pouch, then stuff it with fiberfill through a small opening.
Wrap the center with another strip of fabric, and sew the bow directly onto the headband base.
Adjust the bow size and placement as you like.
The key is to avoid stuffing the very center!
elastic headband

Why not try making an elastic headband with a ribbon? It’s easy! For the headband base, sew a long, narrow piece of fabric into a tube, turn it right side out, thread the elastic through, overlap the ends, and sew them together.
For the ribbon, also make a fabric tube, fold in both ends, layer them in the middle, and stitch while creating gathers.
Finally, place the ribbon over the seam of the base, wrap another strip of fabric around the center of the ribbon and the base, and stitch it to secure everything in place.
You’re done! Try making it with your favorite fabric.
baby headband

A cute bow-shaped headband made with crepe-style fabric scraps.
You can find the scraps, flower organza, ribbon, and braided Edo cord at 100-yen shops.
First, press the fabric scraps with an iron and cut them to match a 15 cm × 7 cm pattern.
Next, fold in half and sew the two edges except the fold.
Turn it right side out and hand-stitch the opening closed.
Accordion-fold the finished piece and tie the center with thread.
Combine the two pieces, retie with the braided cord, and set everything in place with a glue gun.
You’re done! Add any decorations you like to finish it off.
Heart and flower hair accessory

If you want to make something girly and cute, this is for you! Here’s a hair accessory idea using chirimen fabric with flowers and a heart.
Fold the chirimen and craft each petal piece one by one; combining them gives a three-dimensional finish.
The heart is shaped by wrapping a gold cord around wire.
Use a cylindrical container to help create smooth curves.
The size of the cylinder will determine the size of the heart itself, so choose one that looks well-balanced.
Let’s complete a simple-is-best hair accessory!
