When you come across the music genre “hard rock,” what bands do you picture?
By definition, it evolved from styles like blues rock, introducing—as the name suggests—hard-edged guitars, and it reached its peak in the 1970s.
Even so, many different types of bands today continue to develop their sound while showing the influence of hard rock.
So this time, under the theme of popular hard rock bands in Japan, we’ve gathered bands that embody hard-rock elements in a broad sense.

1400km/hCANTA

CANTA is a band formed by top-tier musicians: Luke Takamura, the guitarist/vocalist who was a member of Seikima-II; Raiden Yuzawa on drums; and MASAKI, known for his lightning-fast bass playing.
Starting with this track, “1400km/h,” they aim for melodic hard rock rather than a showcase of technical one-upmanship, delivering classic rock sounds backed by solid musicianship.
PICTURESPay money To my Pain

A loud rock band known for their overwhelming musicianship and English lyrics that deliver a powerful, gripping message.
Since their major debut in 2006, they steadily forged ahead through lineup changes, but in 2012—arguably the peak of their career—the vocalist K suddenly passed away from acute heart failure.
Deeply mourned, the remaining members chose to go on hiatus to preserve the band.
Even after K’s death, they have continued to enjoy strong support, especially from fellow musicians, and remain a monster band whose popularity shows no sign of fading—evidenced by their appearance with guest vocalists at coldrain’s BLARE FEST.

JAMTHE YELLOW MONKEY

THE YELLOW MONKEY, who made their major debut in 1992 and are beloved by many, released “JAM” in 1996.
It became a long-running hit and one of their signature songs.
The powerful vocals and melody are deeply moving.
Although it’s a ballad, it brilliantly conveys a rock feel.

They’re a four-piece rock band formed in Yokohama.
Their music uniquely blends the intensity of post-hardcore and screamo with the intricate, phrase-by-phrase complexity reminiscent of alternative and progressive rock, all balanced with a lush, melodious flair rooted in both Eastern and Western pop traditions.
They’re also the very pioneers who sparked the “Zankyo-kei” trend from the early 2000s onward.
While their distinctive sound tends to polarize listeners, once it clicks, it has the power to drive fans to ecstatic obsession.
Action! 100,000 VoltACTION

ACTION, a band representing Japan’s hard rock/heavy metal scene, was formed in 1982.
Centered around vocalist and guitarist Yoshiro Takahashi, they are characterized by powerful guitar riffs and energetic vocals.
They made their debut in 1984, and in the same year drew attention as a support act for RAINBOW at venues such as the Nippon Budokan and Osaka-jō Hall.
Their signature song, “100,000 VOLT,” has long been cherished by fans as an iconic track of the band.
Their live performances are especially acclaimed, and they actively participate in nationwide tours and music festivals across Japan.

SAVIOR NEVER CRYConcerto Moon

Concerto Moon, one of the bands representing Japan’s heavy metal scene, was formed in 1996 around Norifumi Shima.
They made their major-label debut with VAP in 1998, and their first album reached No.
16 on the Oricon charts.
Blending power metal and neoclassical metal, they have continued to captivate fans at home and abroad with their distinctive sound.
After resuming activities in 2007, they released new works energetically, and in September 2011 unveiled their ninth album, which became a signature release.
Their grand sonic world—woven from ferocious guitar solos, powerful vocals, and dramatic keyboard work—is highly regarded as a one-of-a-kind sound that unites the allure of heavy metal and classical music.

SUNTOWNThe BONEZ

This rock band was formed around JESSE, the vocalist of RIZE—standard-bearers of Japanese mixture rock—and T$UYO$HI (bass) and ZAX (drums), who had earned overwhelming support in the hardcore scene with Pay money to my Pain.
Their songs are distinguished by a deep respect for the music each member has pursued, spanning mixture, punk, and hardcore.
