[2026] A roundup of popular Japanese hard rock bands, including those famous overseas
When you come across the music genre “hard rock,” what bands do you picture?
By definition, it evolved from styles like blues rock, introducing—as the name suggests—hard-edged guitars, and it reached its peak in the 1970s.
Even so, many different types of bands today continue to develop their sound while showing the influence of hard rock.
So this time, under the theme of popular hard rock bands in Japan, we’ve gathered bands that embody hard-rock elements in a broad sense.
Many globally popular bands appear as well, so even if you usually only listen to Western music, we hope you’ll take a look at some Japanese bands!

SUNTOWNThe BONEZ

This rock band was formed around JESSE, the vocalist of RIZE—standard-bearers of Japanese mixture rock—and T$UYO$HI (bass) and ZAX (drums), who had earned overwhelming support in the hardcore scene with Pay money to my Pain.
Their songs are distinguished by a deep respect for the music each member has pursued, spanning mixture, punk, and hardcore.
Distance of the Starry SkyTHE ALFEE

Formed in 1973, THE ALFEE is a Japanese rock band consisting of three members: Masaru Sakurai, Konosuke Sakazaki, and Toshihiko Takamizawa.
They debuted in 1974 as the idol folk band “ALFIE,” and later expanded their musical style by incorporating elements of hard rock.
Since a single released in 1983 became a hit, they have achieved the remarkable feat of having every single chart for over 30 years.
In 2014, they were awarded the title of Honorary Bachelor by Meiji Gakuin University, among other accolades recognizing their achievements.
Spanning genres from folk to hard rock and progressive rock, their music is a must-listen for rock fans.
Midnight SunSIGH

Known as a Japanese experimental metal band, Sigh was formed in Tokyo in 1989.
They have evolved from early extreme metal into a more experimental and avant-garde style.
Songs from their 2007 album Hangman’s Hymn received high acclaim, including being selected by Loudwire among the Top 31 Metal Songs of the 21st Century.
Their 11th full-length album, Heir to Despair, released in 2018, incorporates traditional Japanese instruments and compositional styles, further strengthening its progressive elements.
The band’s leader, Mirai Kawashima, even learned the flute for this album, continually embracing new challenges.
Highly recommended for those seeking an original sound that goes beyond the confines of hard rock.
StatementBORIS

Boris is an ultra-heavy rock band that’s sometimes classified as doom metal.
It’s hard to believe they’re a three-piece—their sound is astonishingly massive and never fails to blow people away.
They’re famous for their deafening live shows, often running so many amps that they barely fit on stage.
They have a devoted following not only in Japan but overseas as well.
If you get the chance, you should experience their sheer volume in person at least once! My recommended album is Pink.
True NorthCrystal Lake

Formed in Tokyo, they stand as a leading force in Japan’s metalcore scene.
Armed with a world-class metal sound, this standout five-piece electrifies audiences not only in live houses across Japan but around the globe.
Their heavy sound design and the frequent, powerful growls by Ryo—conveying a strong emotional core—leave a lasting impression.
With performance and musicianship honed on international stages, they’re a formidable act whose sheer power makes you want to throw your fist in the air.
Warm SnowLa’cryma Christi

La’cryma Christi is a rock band formed in Osaka, and their name means “Tears of Christ.” They are a visual kei band known for makeup and flamboyant fashion, and their sound is described as progressive rock that makes hard rock more original and experimental.
In 1998, their single “With-you” broke into the Oricon Top 10, and their next single, “Mirai Kouro,” earned their first tie-in.
Since then, they have provided multiple ending themes and insert songs for dramas and variety shows.
FIVE-Another Story

They’re a five-member band formed in 2008.
The vocalist, KeiGo, is known for his native-level English, and their hard-and-loud blended songs and performances are popular.
They actively perform live overseas and are steadily growing their fan base.
