Dog FightSABBRABELLS

Formed in the early 1980s, the Japanese heavy metal band SABBRABELLS is known for a sound heavily influenced by Black Sabbath.
With demonic costumes and lyrics, as well as powerful, dramatic songs, they enjoyed such popularity that in 1986 they were dubbed titles like “The Emperor of Meguro Rock-May-Kan” and “The Last Big Name of the Indies.” They made their major-label debut on King Records and released the album SAILING ON THE REVENGE.
Their live album LIVE!! was also well received, but the band disbanded in 1987 after releasing only three albums.
In 2015, they reunited for a limited time and returned to the stage for the first time in about 30 years.
They’re a band that not only fans of ’80s heavy metal but anyone interested in the Japanese music scene should definitely check out.
LA VIE EN ROSED’ERLANGER

One of the bands that laid the groundwork for what we now call “visual kei rock” is D’ERLANGER.
Vocalist kyo and drummer Tetsu are also known for having been in SAVER TIGER—the band that X JAPAN’s hide once played in—during the same period.
LA VIE EN ROSE is one of the band’s signature songs and is especially popular among fans.
Sky of OblivionSADS

SADS is a rock band formed around Kiyoharu, the vocalist of Kuroyume.
Their 2000 single “Boukyaku no Sora” gained attention as the theme song for the drama Ikebukuro West Gate Park, starring Tomoya Nagase.
Its fleeting yet intense sound is a timeless masterpiece that stays with you no matter when you listen to it.
GrasshopperCOCOBAT

These days, bands that “debut on foreign labels” or “play at overseas festivals” are nothing unusual, but cocobat is a Japanese band that has been active worldwide since the early 1990s.
Combining the aggressive bass of band leader TAKE-SHIT with a hardcore punk sound, they have continued to create a one-of-a-kind music.

DEAD END KIDSinugami saakasu dan

The rock band Inugami Circus-dan, which gained attention on the music variety show Ebisu Onsen, has captivated fans for years with its dark aesthetic.
Their name comes from the circus troupe that appears in the film Pastoral: To Die in the Country, and while they previously performed under the name Inugami Circus-dan (using standard characters), in 2012 they adopted their current stylization along with the concept of being a “more lyrical, extreme, underground, Japanese-style band.” Despite a look and concept that often get them labeled as a novelty act, they boast powerful vocals and musicianship, making it easy to understand why their impact on Japan’s indie scene is said to be immeasurable.
Once you start listening, you’ll be drawn into the depths for sure—an exceptional band that only Japanese artists could have created.
Shallow RunnerBLIZARD

BLIZARD is a five-member hard rock band often called a forerunner of the visual-kei movement, thanks to all members being strikingly good-looking.
They made their major debut in 1984, the year after forming, and drew attention when Journey provided a song for them.
Evolving their sound ambitiously and experimentally—from the strongly British-influenced early period to the straightforward hard rock of their later years—they are also known for not receiving proper critical recognition, as their looks often overshadowed their music.
Although they effectively disbanded in 1992, they are a legendary artist you should listen to now more than ever, in an era where musical diversity has expanded.
POWERHER NAME IN BLOOD

Formed in 2008, this metalcore/hard rock band is so powerful you wouldn’t think they’re from Japan.
They’ve earned a solid reputation by supporting famous overseas bands.
The vocalist’s headbanging performance and ferocious death growls are a must-see.
Each member’s distinct personality is also a big part of their appeal.
