There are so many songs that use words that evoke summer—like the blue ocean, clear skies, fireworks, and festivals—as their themes or in their lyrics! When summer comes around, you probably feel like listening to songs with that summery vibe, but with so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide what to play.

So in this article, I’ll introduce some summer tunes that I especially recommend for high school students! I’ve picked out love songs and youth anthems that students can likely relate to, so be sure to listen while reading the lyrics!

Summer TriangleNICO Touches the Walls

If you’re looking for a rock band’s summer song, try this one.

NICO Touches the Walls’ track “Natsu no Daisankakukei” (“Summer Triangle”) was released in 2012 as their 10th single and became a hit after being featured in a Calpis Water commercial.

The shimmering guitar sound and Ryuya Mitsumura’s soaring vocals create a harmony you can’t help but get absorbed in.

And I bet many high schoolers can relate to the lyrics, which straightforwardly depict the feeling of being in love.

Let’s turn up the heat this summer with a cool, hype-inducing dance tune! This track is a collaboration between music unit PKCZ®, CL—known for her work with 2NE1—and world-renowned DJ Afrojack.

Released as a digital single in 2019, its electro sound infused with oriental elements grabs listeners from the first beat.

Perfect for summer party vibes—try using it as BGM in scenes where lots of people are gathered!

This song stands out with its driving beat and bittersweet lyrics.

Released by RADWIMPS in February 2006, it skillfully captures the fragility of love and life.

True to its title, which suggests a trembling sound, the track expresses the heart’s vibrations through music.

It portrays the relationship between “you” and “me,” and the frustration of feelings that don’t quite get across, inviting empathy.

There’s also a message of hope, symbolized by the Earth’s continued rotation and the promise of new beginnings.

It’s perfect for a summer night when you’re feeling a little lonely.

Pareo is emerald.SKE48

On sale 2011/7/27: 6th single “Pareo wa Emerald” MV (special edit ver.)
Pareo is emerald.SKE48

This is a song released by SKE48 in 2011, and as you can tell from the imagery in the lyrics, it’s a perfect fit for summer.

The lyrics are written from a male perspective, depicting someone who’s fallen in love, and many high schoolers may find themselves relating to its pure and straightforward feelings.

Combined with the bright and energetic sound characteristic of the 48 Group, it delivers an even fresher, more summery vibe.

By the way, the “pareo” in the title refers to a skirt-like garment inspired by traditional Tahitian dress from the South Pacific—fabric wrapped around the waist and tied in place.

The music video is packed with summer vibes, so be sure to check it out.

When summer comes, you just can’t help wanting to go to the beach, right? For you, I’d like to recommend a sea-themed track called “UMI.” Its warm sound and melody perfectly match the image of the vast, gentle ocean.

The music video, packed with ocean footage, really gives you that summer vibe, too.

It’s great as BGM for a beach trip, and if you can’t make it to the beach, watching the video is a fun alternative.

Released in 2012 as their sixth single, it garnered considerable attention, partly thanks to the popularity they gained with the previous track, “Tracing Orion.” Its fresh, light rhythm that evokes summer and the stars is incredibly addictive.

The excitement kicks in right from the intro.

Shaka Beach ~ Laka Laka LaUVERworld

This is the band’s eighth single, released in 2007.

Unusually for the band, it features a somewhat distinctive style with samba and Latin elements.

Its refreshing band sound and lyrics—heated and designed to get a crowd going—stand out for their intensity, and despite having no tie-in, it became one of their signature songs, reaching as high as No.

2 on the Oricon charts.
