In Japan’s domestic rock scene, there are many bands that are so far from rock they’re practically pop.

Of course, that’s where the demand is, so there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but I imagine many people feel dissatisfied with the scene as it is.

For those people, I’d like to recommend the band toro.

They’re a three-piece that champions the “revival of rock” and is actively making waves.

Their authentic sound rivals that of the Western rock scene.

Definitely give them a listen.

Their appeal lies in a unique sound that blends driving, straight-ahead beats and guitars reminiscent of South London’s indie scene and US alternative, with experimental choral work and Japanese lyrics.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Eyedress and Soutaiseiriron, their songs combine urgency with delicacy—perfect for listeners searching for something new.

Their music is a fresh take on alternative rock that truly feels like “nothing you’ve encountered before.”

Analogfish was formed in 1999 by three junior high school classmates.

They made their major-label debut in 2004, breaking through after their indie years.

Their unique twin vocals create striking contrasts, and their tight, drum-driven sound stands out even within alternative rock.

On the album “SNS,” they took on songwriting that reflected creative work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lyrics, born from their sharp observations of society and everyday life, continue to resonate deeply with listeners.

Analogfish has been delivering fresh surprises and moving experiences for many years—and we can’t take our eyes off them going forward.
