Beautifulkegawa no marīzu

Though they disbanded to much regret, The MINKS (Kegawa no Maries) were an emblem of Japanese punk.

One of their most popular signature songs is Beautiful.

With phrasing reminiscent of the Sex Pistols, it influenced many later bands.

The music video is distinctive and leaves a strong impression, too.

Nunchaku, the legendary band from Kashiwa in Chiba that blazed through the ’90s and broke up simply because they were “bored.” Their distinctive, one-of-a-kind sound resembles no other band and is addictive.

I’m moved by their songs—freely released with all kinds of ideas—featuring throat-tearing shouts, heavily distorted guitars, rap, and a generous dose of hardcore elements.

A summer afternooneastern youth

It’s a straightforward, powerful track—and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call it one of eastern youth’s signature songs.

Released in June 1998, it paints scenes of summer while singing about the inner turmoil of confronting one’s sense of guilt.

The seasonal imagery—like the chorus of cicadas and sudden showers—is striking.

The piercing guitar sound in the chorus feels as if it’s pushing the protagonist’s resolve forward.

When you’re in the mood to face yourself, it’s sure to resonate.

It might be nice to listen to it alone on a summer evening.
