[For 5-year-olds] Crafts to try in July! Ideas that capture the season

Five-year-olds are getting better at using their hands to do all kinds of things.

At this stage, their desire to try new things really grows.

So here, we’re introducing July crafts that are perfect for five-year-olds.

We’ve prepared lots of ideas, from summer-themed transparent creations to fun Tanabata decorations.

Enjoy a fun time with the children while nurturing their creativity.

Because items made by children are treated as works, we consistently use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the main text.

lantern

Colorful Lanterns [Craft] [Handmade Ornaments]
lantern

The lanterns that appear at summer festivals and during Obon have a plump, charming silhouette that makes them cute as decorations, and people are delighted to take them home.

First, draw any picture you like on a paper cup with colored pens.

Next, cut a strip of colored construction paper slightly longer than the height of the cup.

Tape this colored paper to the bottom and rim of the paper cup with cellophane tape.

Wrap black construction paper with double-sided tape around the bottom, then make a handle with twine, and you’re done.

It also seems like a great chance to naturally experience Japan’s traditional culture.

Surprise Parfait

[Kindergarten/Preschool] July Dream Big Parfait: Drawing and Crafts
Surprise Parfait

Why not try making a jumbo parfait of your dreams together with the kids? First, cut tissue paper into circles and paint them with watercolors.

Next, tear pieces of origami paper and paste them onto a template with a parfait glass drawn on it.

In addition to origami, using crumpled floral paper adds a three-dimensional finish.

You can use the circular tissue paper as scoops of ice cream, make Pocky sticks or pudding out of origami—by combining various materials, it will look just as delicious as a real parfait.

Have fun making it together with the kids in a lively, cheerful atmosphere!

Pig-shaped mosquito coil holder and wind chime

[Kindergarten/Preschool] July Pig Mosquito Coil & Wind Chimes! Painting/Crafts
Pig-shaped mosquito coil holder and wind chime

Transform a single paper plate into a pig-shaped mosquito coil and a wind chime! This is an idea for creating summer-themed motifs.

Cut out the center of the paper plate and use the circular piece as a wind chime.

Have the children draw patterns on it with crayons.

You can also use a resist technique by painting over it with watercolors.

Meanwhile, color the rim of the paper plate and add pig ears to make it into a mosquito coil.

Displaying both side by side on construction paper will make for a lively and enjoyable craft project.

Note: Since a utility knife is used to cut out the paper plate, be sure that this step is performed by a teacher or guardian.

turtle

[Childcare Craft] Summer Wall Decoration: Cute Turtles with Paper Plates
turtle

This is a cute turtle wall decoration made with paper plates and raffia tape.

First, color the paper plate freely with crayons.

Next, make diagonal cuts with scissors and weave in the raffia tape.

It’s fun to see a lattice pattern form, just like a turtle shell.

For the turtle’s head and limbs, attach double-sided tape to pieces of construction paper you’ve cut out and stick them onto the paper plate.

Draw the eyes with a crayon, add double-sided tape to the back, and it’s done.

Surrounded by turtles that look like they’re swimming leisurely through the sea, you’ll really feel the summer vibe.

watermelon

[Watermelon Craft (for 5-year-olds)] Perfect for summer activities at daycare!
watermelon

A door plate with a watermelon motif sounds lovely! Using red and green construction paper, you can create a piece that’s full of summery vibes.

It would be fun to get creative with the rind and the seeds together with the kids.

The idea of using paper plates to add a three-dimensional effect is great, too.

Once it’s finished, let’s display it in the room to boost the summer mood.

Through the making process, it also seems like a great way to nurture children’s imagination and creativity.

Enjoy working on it together and make some wonderful summer memories!

Stained glass-style fireworks

[Summer Craft] Stained-Glass Style Fireworks! Sparkly, Cute Fireworks to Hold Up to the Sun [For 4-Year-Olds]
Stained glass-style fireworks

How about making stained-glass-style art that can capture the sparkle of summer fireworks? Fold a piece of black construction paper and cut out several triangles.

When you unfold it, you’ll see a fireworks-like pattern.

Next, stick colorful cellophane onto a sheet of parchment paper.

Using lots of different colors will make it look even more like stained glass.

Finally, layer the black paper over the parchment paper, and it’s complete! When light shines through, it glows beautifully.

It seems like the perfect summer craft to spark children’s imagination.

Chocolate banana stall

[Kindergarten/Daycare] July Festival! Chocolate Banana Stall: Painting and Craft Activity
Chocolate banana stall

Why not make a classic festival chocolate-banana stand? If you’re doing this with three-year-olds, the teacher should pre-cut the banana shapes and let the children start from the coloring.

Once the bananas are colored, stick on decorations made from finely cut origami paper.

It’s easiest if you apply glue over the whole banana first and then sprinkle the pieces on top.

Finally, decorate construction paper to look like a food stall, and line up and paste the chocolate bananas to finish! Create a delicious-looking chocolate-banana stand and enjoy a summery vibe.
