wind chime

There are many festivals across Japan where wind chimes take center stage, and those in the Kanto region may be familiar with events like the Enmusubi Wind Chimes at Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and the Wind Chime Market at Kawasaki Daishi.
How about trying your hand at making a charming wind chime yourself? The materials are a paper cup, colored paper to decorate the cup, twine, a small bell, and a paper strip (tanzaku).
First, attach the colored paper to the paper cup.
If you don’t have colored paper, draw a lovely illustration with felt-tip pens.
Thread the twine through the paper cup, attach the bell and the tanzaku, and you’re done.
Decorating the tanzaku and the paper cup is lots of fun, so this is also recommended for events where many people gather.
gel candle

Let’s try making a gel candle with a wonderfully cool look! Prepare a heat-resistant glass and first secure the candle wick to the bottom.
Next, layer a few colors of colored sand around it.
Once you’ve filled about one-third of the glass with sand, add decorative items like shells.
In a separate heat-resistant container, warm and melt the gel candle, then pour it over the sand and shells in the heat-resistant glass.
It’s recommended to mix about two colors of gel as well.
Once the gel sets, you’re done! It’s very easy because you’re simply adding the materials step by step.
firework ball

Let’s make a firework ball that can be used as room decor, an accent by the window or entryway, or even as a hanging ornament! With fireworks as the motif, it’s perfect for summer decorations.
First, cut both black origami paper and colored origami paper into circles.
Fold the black paper, draw the firework pattern, and cut it out.
Next, paste the black paper onto the colored paper.
Make a total of six identical pieces! Finally, apply glue to each semicircle, attach them one by one, and attach a string before closing the last side to finish.
Make lots to create a curtain-like display, or connect a few together for a lovely look!
Fruit cross-section coaster

Fruits are great for staying hydrated in the hot summer, aren’t they? Their vibrant appearance also boosts that refreshing summer feeling.
Let’s make colorful coasters inspired by the cross-sections of fresh fruit.
It’s a simple project where you stick origami paper, masking tape, and the like onto coasters to create fruit cross-sections.
Since you’ll be placing wet items on them, finish the surface with a water-repellent material such as a plastic sleeve or similar.
To make them look even more beautiful when a glass is set on top, consider adding decorations that reflect light.
Plump, three-dimensional wind chime

Here, we’ll introduce a three-dimensional wind chime made easily with origami.
Prepare two standard 15 cm square sheets of origami.
Fold one sheet into quarters to make a smaller square, then cut it out as if using a template.
When it forms a flower shape with four petals, thread a string through the hole in the center, apply glue to the outer edges, and stick them together.
Cut the other sheet in half, fold each half once, thread a string through, and glue it.
That’s it—finished.
A cool-looking wind chime really evokes the feeling of summer, doesn’t it?
Handmade uchiwa (Japanese handheld fan)

There may be days in August when you find yourself fanning with an uchiwa.
Ready-made ones are fine, but how about spending summer with a handmade fan? Take three sheets of origami paper, fold them accordion-style, and glue them together in a row.
Attach chopsticks to the left and right ends and secure them with cellophane tape.
When you hold the chopsticks and spread it open, it becomes a fan.
For a fun variation, use red origami paper and stick on strips of white and green origami.
Draw black dots on the red paper and fold it accordion-style.
Then, assemble it the same way to complete a watermelon-themed uchiwa.
Sunflower wreath

Here’s a sunflower wreath idea that will instantly brighten up your room.
First, prepare a paper plate.
Cut out the center to turn it into a wreath base.
Next, decorate the paper-plate wreath by wrapping it with construction paper and adding ribbons.
Finally, adorn it with sunflowers made from construction paper.
The yellow color will make a great accent in your room, and it will also create a cheerful atmosphere if you display it by your front door.
