Karaoke songs that are easy for middle school students to score high on

The number-one concern middle schoolers have in music is voice change.

While girls might not feel it as much, it’s a period when the vocal cords change significantly for both boys and girls, making it arguably the most difficult time to sing in your entire life.

For middle schoolers going through this, just controlling pitch can be challenging.

On top of that, recent Japanese pop songs often feature many high notes and few rests, which makes it even harder to aim for high scores.

So this time, we’ve selected songs that even middle school students with unstable voices can use to aim for high scores.

We also carefully considered how well the songs will be received, so be sure to check them out to the end.

SunYorushika

Yorushika’s new song “Taiyo” (“Sun”).

Yorushika is known for their ennui-tinged musical style, and this track is particularly calm even by their standards.

As that calmness suggests, the vocal range is quite narrow, so depending on your voice, even male junior high school students might be able to sing it in the original key.

There aren’t any especially intense vocal lines, and there are clear rests, so if you just focus on pitch, you should be able to aim for a high score.

Be sure to check it out.

Aimyon – On the Day of Goodbye [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO]
On this day of goodbyeaimyon

Aimyong’s first digital-only single, released in February 2020.

It was also selected as the theme song for Nippon TV’s NEWS ZERO.

It’s a mid- to slow-tempo rock song with a relatively narrow vocal range and a fairly simple melody, making it a perfect choice for aiming for a high score at karaoke! It’s also recommended for those with lower voices who struggle with high notes, as it’s easy to sing.

Of course, it’d be ideal to sing it with a cool tone like Aimyong herself, but be careful not to force it or slip into an imitation—sing it in your own way.

This is the song “Onaji Yoru” (“Same Night”) by DAOKO, a hugely popular artist in Japan and abroad.

It’s included on the album “THANK YOU BLUE.” The track has a languid, mellow vibe.

Try singing it in a whispery voice, as if you’re sharing a secret, taking lots of breath.

If you mix plenty of breath into your tone, you should be able to capture DAOKO’s mysterious atmosphere!

If I’m wrapped in kindnessArai Yumi

Yumi Matsutoya – If Wrapped in Kindness (THE LAST WEDNESDAY TOUR 2006 ~HERE COMES THE WAVE~)
If I'm wrapped in kindnessArai Yumi

A song released in 1976 as the third single when Yumi Matsutoya was still Yumi Arai.

It’s an old song, but it was also chosen as a theme for the animated film “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” and has been used many times in commercials for various products, so even junior high school students as of 2019 have probably heard it at least once.

It’s truly a timeless classic.

That said, perhaps reflecting the era when it was first released in 1976, the melody is much simpler than modern songs, so it shouldn’t be too hard to score high when singing it at karaoke.

Try singing carefully, tracing the original melody.

Your parents might be delighted if you sing it when you go to karaoke with them!

Teenager ForeverKing Gnu

A track from King Gnu’s 3rd album CEREMONY, which was released in January 2020.

Teenager Forever was used in commercials for Sony’s wireless earphones and Hi-Res Walkman, and was released in advance in February 2019.

Among Japanese rock bands, King Gnu has very strong vocal ability, so many people might worry, “Can I really aim for a high score with this?” However, this particular song has a relatively singable melody.

If you set the karaoke key to match your own range and make sure not to lag behind the slightly fast-paced vocal rhythm, anyone with some singing experience should definitely be able to aim for a high score.

Give it a try!

breathingSuda Masaki

This is a song by Masaki Suda, an actor who’s hugely popular not only among junior high school students but all across Japan.

It’s a great pick if you’re aiming for a high score, since it’s easy to keep the rhythm.

The tempo is just right—not too fast and not too slow—so together with the simple beat, it’s very easy to sing and makes it easier to score well.

However, the chorus is a bit higher than the other parts, so be careful not to go off-pitch!

Field Poop SongTarumi Kenji

This song by Kenji Darvish, which sings about the desperate feeling of suddenly needing to use the bathroom while you’re out, is a good one despite the goofy content, isn’t it? The many spoken or chant-like, unpitched parts make it easier, but when the sections have a proper melody, you can’t help focusing on the lyrics.

The trick is to deliberately forget the lyrics once and try singing only the melody.

If you sing everything with “du” or “tyu,” you can check both pitch and rhythm, so give it a try.
