The lie in the mirror smiles — T-BOLAN
A lie in the mirror smiles.T-BOLAN

This is the track included as the B-side to the million-selling single “Bye For Now,” released in November 1992.

It portrays the frustration and self-loathing in romance that make you act contrary to your true feelings.

Many listeners will feel a tightening in their chest at the scene where the self in the mirror smiles as if mocking one’s own lies.

The word choices—unusual for the time—also leave a strong impression.

The irresistible charm lies in the gap between the breezy pop-rock sound and the heartrending lyrics.

Moritomo Arashi’s soaring high notes in the chorus feel like the protagonist’s inner scream, stirring the listener’s emotions.

It’s a song you’ll want to hear on nights when you’re hiding your true feelings.

Mother’s BroomHisaishi Joe

Joe Hisaishi – Mother’s Broom (from Kiki’s Delivery Service)
Mother’s BroomHisaishi Joe

Conducted by Joe Hisaishi himself, who is active worldwide, “A Mother’s Broom” from Studio Ghibli’s gem of a film Kiki’s Delivery Service is being performed by an overseas orchestra.

It begins with an introduction reminiscent of “A Town with an Ocean View,” which plays in the film, and then transitions into a lovely violin solo.

This piece accompanies the scene where Kiki sets off on her journey, seen off by her parents and friends, and it’s a masterpiece that conveys her mother’s kindness and the warmth of her hometown.

The performance itself also conveys that gentleness and warmth, bringing a sense of comfort to the heart.

My Neighbor Totoro Orchestra Stories – 05. The Path of the Wind
Path of the WindHisaishi Joe

The indispensable classic “The Path of the Wind” from Studio Ghibli’s beloved masterpiece My Neighbor Totoro is presented here in an orchestral performance.

This piece is included in “Orchestra Stories: My Neighbor Totoro,” in which composer Joe Hisaishi restructured music from My Neighbor Totoro so it can be enjoyed with narration.

In the original, Hisaishi—then influenced by minimalism—used an electronic sound, but this version becomes a grand orchestral work that brings out the beauty of acoustic instruments.

The sheet music is also available, so students and members of community orchestras who want to enjoy ensemble playing on real instruments might consider giving it a try.

After the introduction, the violin solo is superb, vividly conjuring up images of Japan’s pastoral landscapes.

Sad, sad, palm of the hand.kyiku

It’s a translucent, shimmering pop song that gently touches the sorrow hidden in the heart.

Created by the Vocaloid producer kyiku, it was released in September 2025.

The track portrays a protagonist who carries a sense of isolation—as if cut off from the world—yet prays for their unchanging everyday life to continue.

That earnest longing tightens your chest before you know it.

The creator has said it’s “filled with feelings I want to cherish,” and you’ll find yourself deeply drawn into its world.

It’s the kind of song that seeps into your heart when you listen alone on a quiet, contemplative night.

More than regression, it's a human, cute, and catastrophic life!!!ǢǪ

An emo, alternative number that grabs your heart with the sheer impulse to live.

It’s a work by the Vocaloid producer ǢǪ, included in the compilation album “Eingebrannt,” releasing in August 2025.

The blend of its raw, rugged sound with the earnest vocals of StarDust Infinity is irresistible.

The lyrics depict a longing for the brilliance of life—so intense it borders on ruin—guided by visceral sensations like cells and a beating heart.

The repeated cries feel like a soul laid bare, and listening to it makes your chest burn.

On nights when your heart is a mess with uncontrollable emotions, immerse yourself in this world.

Formed in Gunma Prefecture in 2004 mainly by classmates since elementary school, Hideyoshi is a rock band.

Their sound, rooted in alternative rock, and the powerful vocals of frontman Hideyoshi Kakizawa resonate deeply.

They debuted in November 2008 with the mini-album “Hesono,” which was selected for Tower Records’ ‘Tawarekomen.’ Their music also gained attention when a song was chosen as an insert track for the 2010 film “Solanin.” Even as they celebrate their 20th anniversary, they continue to operate with an indie spirit—definitely a band to watch.

Incidentally, fellow Gunma native Shimizu Iyori of back number once remarked, “We can’t beat these guys.”

a prayer to the gods; relying on divine interventionsyudou

Syudou, also known for working on Ado’s “Usseewa.” This work centers on the theme of “yearning for happiness,” affirming the figure of someone who keeps facing forward while carrying shame and gritty desires.

While seeking salvation from a god yet ultimately trying to carve out their fate by their own power, that paradoxical human strength is depicted through word choices that are quintessentially Syudou—combining aggression with delicacy.

The song is set for release in July 2025 and will serve as the opening theme for the TV anime The Banned Mole.

When you’re up against a reality that won’t go your way and fed up with your own weakness, listening to it might make you feel as if a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.
