The sports day held every year at nursery schools and kindergartens.

It’s an event that not only the children, but also their parents look forward to.

Many teachers are probably thinking, “We want to make it a fun sports day that gets both participants and cheerleaders excited!” So this time, we’ve gathered ideas for fun events that are perfect for sports day.

From dynamic and unique activities you can only do at sports day, like rolling giant balls or breaking bell balloons, to ones that cleverly incorporate classic folktales and pretend play that children love—there are plenty of ideas for events that curious kids will adore and join with sparkling eyes! Use these as inspiration to plan a sports day full of humor that’s a little different from the usual.

Water Balloon Splash Ball Toss

Water Balloon Splash Ball Toss

At a summer outdoor sports day, I highly recommend adding the “Water Balloon Splash Ball Toss”! Normally, ball toss games use fabric balls, but this version uses water balloons.

Of course, any that miss the basket will hit the ground and burst into a watery splash! But that’s exactly what makes it so fun.

In summer, getting wet isn’t too cold—if anything, it’s refreshing, right? Kids will surely love it.

Just wear swimsuits or water-friendly clothing so you’re fine even if you get soaked, and have a great time!

Hoop diving

Hoop diving

This is a hula-hoop event that builds a sense of unity—not only between parents and children, but among everyone on the same team.

First, each team lines up in a single file, alternating parent and child, and holds hands.

Without letting go, they pass a hula-hoop from toe to fingertip, threading it over their bodies and on to the next person.

Teams race to see who can pass it all the way to the end the fastest.

It’s surprisingly tough—and it’s actually harder for adults to get through the hoop than for kids, which is part of the fun.

Cheer hard for your own team, of course, but for the opposing team too, and let’s all get excited and enjoy it together!

4-person 1-leg relay

4-person 1-leg relay

This is an obstacle race recommended as a competition for parents, designed to be tackled in teams.

Parents form groups of four and work together to complete various missions.

After one lap of the course, they pass the baton to the next group of four.

You can customize the obstacles and missions set up on the course in many ways, and since it’s done in teams of four, it also serves as a great opportunity for parents to connect with one another.

Try incorporating it while exploring different variations.

The Hero’s Grand Adventure

The Hero's Grand Adventure

Kids are sure to join in with excitement! Here’s an idea for a Brave Hero’s Grand Adventure.

In this event, parents and children work together to overcome activities like mats and balance beams, defeat a big monster, and then reach the finish line.

Using a crown or a cape as the baton helps create the right atmosphere—highly recommended! Adjust the number and type of activities based on your venue size, and try incorporating it into your sports day.

PET bottle circuit

With its colorful look, it really lifts your spirits! Let me introduce an idea for a PET-bottle circuit.

All you need are 2-liter plastic bottles, tape, and paint.

Many people find it challenging to prepare all the equipment for circuit activities.

This idea is appealing because it makes use of plastic bottles, so there’s no need to buy new equipment.

Try creating a course where you walk across the tops of plastic bottles filled with brightly colored water, keeping your balance as you go!
